The 31st Annual Carroll, Jo Daviess and Stephenson Regional Spelling Bee, sponsored by Aaron Mercier, Regional Superintendent, was held Thursday, February 28, 2013 at the Pearl City Elementary School Gym. Twenty-eight students in grades four through eight competed in the Spelling Bee that is coordinated by the Regional Office of Education. The contestants were the first and second place winners from their local school district contests.
The 2013 Regional Spelling Bee Champion is Cecilia Guerrero, a 7th grader representing Eastland Schools.
Peyton Hansen, an 8th grader representing Dakota School District, earned 2nd place. The two finalists, Cecilia and Peyton, competed for several rounds, until Peyton misspelled the word “impetuous” in the 14th round. Cecilia went on to spell “mikado” correctly in the 15th and final round to clinch the title.
The Scripps National Spelling Bee will take place May 26-May 31, 2013 in Washington, D.C. The all expense paid trip for our Champion and one parent/guardian is made possible by the generous donations of many individuals and businesses throughout the region.
