William “Beef” Daehler, age 49, of Chadwick, Illinois, died Wednesday, April 17, 2013 at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Chicago, Illinois. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, April 22, 2013 at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church, Chadwick, with Pastor Chris Schoon officiating. Burial will take place at the Chadwick Cemetery, Chadwick. A visitation will be held from 9:00 to 10:30 a.m., prior to the service at the church. Bill was born March 5, 1964, the son of Leon and Marilyn (Erdmier) Daehler in Morrison, Illinois. He attended Chadwick High School, graduating with the Class of 1983.
Bill worked at Larem’s Machine Shop, Chadwick, Tee Lee Popcorn, Shannon, Carroll Tiling Services, Chadwick, and Wahl Clipper Corporation, Sterling, Illinois. He enjoyed the outdoors, fishing, riding ATV’s, building turkey fryers, and spending time with his dog, Josie.
Bill will be dearly missed by his brother, Jeffrey Daehler of Chadwick, Illinois; sister, Connie (Kevin) Dimmick of Mt. Carroll, Illinois; three nephews, Kiersten, Kyler, and Koltin; one neice Kaileine; and his Jack Russell terrier, Josie. He is preceded in death by his father, Leon in 1995, and his mother, Marilyn in 2006.
Evelyn Mae Nailor
Evelyn Mae Nailor, 82, Wright City Missouri, April 15, 2013. Mrs. Nailor is survived by her daughter, Pamela (Theodore) Picraux of Washington, MO, daughter, Sandra (David) Christopher of Wright City, MO, son, Thomas (Jill) Nailor of Mundelein, IL, son, Henry (Kristi) Nailor of Kirkwood, MO, brother, Cornelius (Barbara) Geerts of Morrison, IL, brother, Cecil (Pearl) Geerts of Erie, IL, brother, Robert (Janice) Geerts of Milledgeville, IL, sister, Jeannie (Vernon) Schaver of Fulton, IL, 8 grandchildren, she is preceded in death by her father, Henry Geerts, mother, Jennie Geerts, spouse, Earl T. Nailor, brother, Jacob Geerts.
Evelyn was a long time member of Open Hearts Methodist Church in Wright City, and taught Sunday School for over 30 years. She also loved to crochet.
A funeral service will be held Friday, April 19, 10 am at Open Hearts Church, 70 Bell road, Wright City, MO. Interment will be at Wright City Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Thursday, April 18, 2013 from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Pitman Funeral Home, 300 E. Veterans Memorial Parkway, Wright City, MO 63390. Dorotha Mae Smith
Long-time Chadwick resident and community booster, Dorotha Mae Smith, died April 17, 2013, at Manor Court in Freeport at the age of 101. Born in Dixon, Illinois, in 1911, Dorotha lived almost her entire life in Chadwick and the Northwest Illinois region except for a number of years in Butte, Montana, and Harlan, Iowa, and the years of her service in the Coast Guard during the Second World War.
As a result of that service, Dorotha, known to many of her friends and family as Dot, was for a time the oldest living war veteran in Carroll County. She was the first female commander of the Chadwick American Legion Post, and the second woman commander in the state of Illinois.
Honored for community service by the Masonic Lodge and the DAR, she was instrumental in establishing the Chadwick Public Library and served as trustee of the library for a decade. She compiled the Chadwick High School Alumni Directory, served as co-Chairman of the Bi-Centennial Celebration, and as Coordinator of the Chadwick Centennial.
A graduate of Frances Shimer College, Dorotha taught school for a number of years in the Chadwick – Milledgeville area, and following her military service was employed at the Savanna Army Depot for 26 years. She served on the board of directors for the Farmer’s State Bank of Chadwick and Mount Carroll, the Rolling Hills Progress Center, and Timber Lake Playhouse. Visiting actors and directors at the playhouse frequently lived with her in Chadwick during their time at the theater. In 2010 she was elected to the Timber Lake Playhouse Hall of Fame.
With former Chadwick High School teacher, Frank McCann, Dot was an important force in the Chadwick Boosters Association, which provided lights for the high school baseball field using poles from the defunct ski jump at Terrapin Ridge.
She was a 50-year member of the Eastern Star and served as Worthy Matron, and she was an active member of the Carroll County Council on Aging, the Carroll County Historical Society, and was a charter member of WIMSA (Women in Military Service for America) and the Oakville Country Club.
She was preceded in death by her husband Jewell Reynolds Smith, Sr., her parents, W. J. and Eva (Brink) Schreiner, and a sister Bethel. She is survived by a sister, Jean Unzicker, of Rockford, IL, a son, Reynolds, and his wife, Linda, of Durham, NC, and a grandson, Lincoln, of Boston, MA.
A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, April 27, 2013, at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Chadwick. Burial will be in the Chadwick Cemetery. Clarence “Bud” A. Dunn, age 75 of Mount Carroll, Illinois, died on Tuesday, April 16, 2013 at Iowa City V.A. Healthcare System, Iowa City Iowa. A funeral service was held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, April 20, 2013 at Trinity Lutheran Church, rural Mt. Carroll. Burial took place in Trinity Lutheran Cemetery, rural Mt. Carroll with Military rites accorded by the Mt. Carroll American Legion Post #67. Visitation was held Friday, April 19, 2013 at Frank-Law-Jones Funeral Home, Mt Carroll. A memorial fund has been established in Bud’s memory.

Joann Irene Messmer, age 83, of Thomson, died Friday, April 19, 2013 at the Big Meadows Nursing Home, Savanna. A funeral service will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday, April 25, 2013 at the Law-Jones Funeral Home, Savanna. Visitation will be held4:00 – 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 24, 2013 at the Law-Jones Funeral Home, Savanna. Burial will be in Lower York Cemetery, Thomson. Memorials may be given for the Alzheimer’s Association.

James Lou Pratt, age 64 of Hanover, Illinois died on Wednesday, April 17, 2013 at Midwest Medical Center, Galena. A funeral service will be held at 12:00 Noon, Thursday, April 25, 2013 at Law-Jones Funeral Home, Hanover. Military rites will be accorded by the Hanover V.F.W. Post #5300.
