This year we started a new program. We formed a Membership Advisory Committee. The goal of the committee was to educate some of our non-farm members on Farm Bureau along with showing them various agriculture and ag-related businesses within the county. We started out last July with an intro to Farm Bureau meeting. We brought the group in for a presentation on who Farm Bureau is, benefits of being a member, some of the programs we sponsor, and a history of our organization. We also surveyed our committee to see what impressions and experiences they had with both Farm Bureau and agriculture. Then in October we took them on our first set of farm tours. We toured Hunter Haven Farms, Stitzel Hog Farm, and Smith Farms in Milledgeville. The group got a first-hand view of a dairy, a hog farm, and then a grain farm.
The second set of tours just took place here recently. We took the group to Neumiller Farms, Sullivan’s Foods, and Freedom Hills Ranch. Once again the group received an up close view of some farming operations and a chance to learn more about the grocery business. Our hosts did an excellent job of explaining their practices to our group. Our group learned about animal care, antibiotics and hormone truths with animal production, as well as other truths about agriculture. We will be looking to do another committee in July.
Carroll and Ogle County Farm Bureaus are sponsoring a trip to the John Deere Harvester Works in Moline and the John Deere Pavillion. The tour will be on Monday, July 22. It will leave Milledgeville High School at 7:15 a.m. and return at approximately 3:45 p.m. We will start with a tour of the John Deere Pavillion followed by lunch at the River House Bar & Grill. After lunch we will tour Harvester Works. Cost is $25 per person which includes motorcoach transportation, admission, and a buffet lunch.
There are some restrictions for the tour. One, you have to be at least 13 years of age. There are no video cameras, cell phones, or photos allowed. There are also no open toe shoes or sandals allowed. Reservations are due by July 8th to the Carroll County Farm Bureau at 815-244-3001.
We held another successful Progressive Ag Safety Day. A big thank you goes out to those who volunteered to serve as presenters. The presenters were as follows: Milledgeville Fire Department-Fire Safety, Jo-Carroll Energy-Electrical Safety, Bunge out of Fulton-Grain Safety, Carroll County Sheriff’s Department-Bike Safety, and the 911 Dispatch Center-911. We had 38 children in attendance for what ended up being a much better weather day than was called for. Again thank you to all those who presented and those who assisted in planning the event.
