Kimberly is the daughter of Larry and Denise Johnson of Shannon and is a 2013 graduate of Eastland High School. Field Museum Scientists Return to Hanover

The Jo Daviess Conservation Foundation is pleased to announce the Field Museum from Chicago will once again be returning to Wapello Land and Water Reserve for a Bio-Blitz. In addition to Wapello, they will be expanding their research area to include Eagle’s Nest Land and Water Preserve, located near Wapello. In order to make this event as successful as possible, many volunteers will be needed. The experts and staff from JDCF will be on hand to provide training to all volunteers.

The Field Museum will be starting on the evening of Friday, June 29th with work beginning at 8:30pm until after dark. They will be setting bug nets and continuing their bug collections. On Saturday, June 30th, work will begin at 10am and continue all day. Volunteers are welcome to arrive at any time on Saturday. Tours of the preserve will given at 1pm and 3pm. The weekend will conclude with a potluck at the Hanover VFW at 5pm on Saturday.

JDCF is thrilled to continue this partnership with The Field Museum. The diversity found at Wapello has been compared to that found in the Amazon. Preliminary studies this year have turned up 6 new species that the Field Museum has never found before. Help us continue this research to improve the surroundings for these insects. Stitches and Blooms: 2013 Carroll County Garden Walk

Enjoy many gardens in unique and beautiful country settings. Mark your calendars for the 2013 Carroll County Garden Walk to be held June 29th & 30th at Lake Carroll, IL.

This will include a range of young, developing gardens to very mature gardens that reflect years of nurturing. There are lake front gardens, sun and shade gardens, natural areas, wooded pathways, water features and much more for your strolling pleasure.

Ticket cost for the event is $10 and each ticket includes a raffle chance to win a beautiful handmade item from the Lake Carroll Quilt Club. Independent raffle tickets for the quilted items will also be available for additional chances to win.

Tickets for the event are available in advance at Twice Told Tales in Lanark at the Unique Mall and through the Lake Carroll Women’s Club (). 
Day of event tickets will be available at the Payne Road entrance to Lake Carroll off Highway 73 on Saturday, June 29th from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and on Sunday, June 30th from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Several special events will be held in conjunction with the garden walk. The Lake Carroll Clubhouse will offer lunch specials and will be the site of the raffle drawing at 3 p.m. on Sunday, June 30th. Trailside Inn & General Store will offer a lunch special, two-for-one mini golf, and wine purchase discounts when you show your garden walk ticket. Silver Moon Winery will offer wine purchase discounts and a “ reservation only” event following Saturday’s walk hours. Contact them directly for more information.

How to Create an Edwardian Up-Do

Elizabeth Myelle will demonstrate the various Edwardian up-do’s of the early 1900s. She will reveal the hairstyles and tips to the Gibson Girl, Psyche Knot and Low Roll. Also, learn how to French braid at the end of the presentation.

This event will take place on Saturday, June 22nd from 1-2pm. The 1876 Banwarth House & Museum is located at 408 E. Sycamore St in Elizabeth, IL. If you are interested in the museum itself, please come at least a half hour before the lecture for an informative guided tour. Admission fee is a $3.00 donation. Historical Society Annual Meeting

The Carroll County Historical Society annual meeting will be Sunday, June 30, 2013, at 3:00 p.m. at the Owen P. Miles Museum, Mt. Carroll. Officers and directors will be elected for the coming year. The Museum will be open for visitors to enjoy the summer displays of “Personal Collections” featuring a sample of collections from local residents. Browse through our building, see recent accessions, view the restoration of the west porch, and visit with other historically-minded members and guests. This meeting is open to the public. Luther College Announces Dean’s List

Kevin Kraus, Luther College vice president for academic affairs and dean of the college, has announced that 792 were named to the 2013 spring semester Dean’s List.

Connor Stanton, Luther College junior from Morrison, Ill., was named to the list.

Paige Schneider, Luther College senior from Mount Carroll, Ill., was named to the list.

Emily Dufford, Luther College sophomore from Stockton, Ill., was named to the list.

To be named to the dean’s list, a student must earn a semester grade point average of 3.5 or better on a 4.0 scale and must complete at least 12 credit hours with 10 hours of conventional grades (A, B, C, D).

Commercial Space Available For Stephenson County Fair

A limited number of commercial exhibit spaces are still available for the upcoming Stephenson County Fair for both inside and outside participants. The 2013 Stephenson County Fair is scheduled for July 9 through 14; discounts are available for first-time exhibitors reserving inside display space.

Carroll County Dog Obedience Sessions Scheduled

All 4-H’ers are invited to take advantage of dog obedience classes now being offered. The classes will be held June 24, & July 8 & 22 at the 4-H Fair exhibit building at the Milledgeville Fairgrounds. Time of the classes is 6:30-7:30 p.m. each session. All youth must be accompanied by a parent.

You will learn what you can and cannot do in the ring while you are being judged. Learn hand placement, correct foot work and the pattern that the judge will be asking you to do. Every participant will need to bring with them their dog, proof of rabies vaccination (required), a choke collar, a 6 ft. leash, water bowl, bags and paper towels to clean up and dog treats.

Carroll County 4-H’ers Coordinate Spring Clean Up

Carroll County 4-H Jr. Ambassadors invite all community members and fellow 4-H families to help clean up Savanna parks. The group will meet at 8:00 a.m. on Friday, June 28th, at Marquette Park in Savanna and paint picnic tables and benches. From there the group will go to 6th Street Park and Helle Park and do the same thing. With enough help, the group hopes to be done by 2:00 p.m.

All participants should bring their own paint brushes, paint clothes and sack lunch and drinks. Rain date for the spring clean-up day is Saturday, June 29th. To register to attend or if you have any questions, contact the Carroll County Extension Office at or e-mail Leanne Rahn at by June 26th.

Carroll County 4-H Fair Entries Due

All Carroll County 4-H Fair entries are due into the Carroll County University of Illinois Extension Office by 4:30 p.m., Tuesday, July 2. If any 4-H member has not gotten their copy of the fair book yet, you need to contact your 4-H leader immediately.

The Carroll County 4-H Fair will be held August 3, (General Projects, Foods & Clothing) thru August 10, at the Milledgeville fair grounds. The 4-H Dog show will be held at 9:00 a.m. and 4-H Clothing Judging and Style Show will be at 2:00 p.m. on July 27, at the Milledgeville fair grounds. Illinois State Fair Jr. Livestock Entries Due

Illinois State Fair Junior Livestock, Horse Show and General Entry fair books and entry forms are now available on the Illinois State Fair website.

Any 4-H member wanting to exhibit in the State Fair Jr. Livestock area – beef, dairy, sheep, swine, poultry – needs to return their completed forms to the Extension office no later than 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 26. This is also the deadline for 4-H families to order their car and people passes for state fair for the animal shows through the Extension Office.

Ag Olympics Event to be Held at Fair

The Carroll County 4-H Program and the Carroll County Farm Bureau Young Leaders will be hosting an “Ag Olympics ‘13” at the Carroll Co. Fair on Thursday night August 8 from 4:30 – 6:30 p.m. in front of the grandstand. Check-in will be on the stage.

Teams will play a maximum of 6 zany games each. Games may be wet and messy, so participants are encouraged to dress for a mess! Each game will be a timed event. The top three teams in each age division will be awarded a prize.

Age divisions are 8-11 yr olds; 12-14 yr olds; 15-19 yr olds and 20 yr olds & up. Each team is made up of four individuals. The age of the oldest team member determines the team’s age division.

Registrations are due to the Farm Bureau or Carroll Co. Extension Office by July 29. Registration forms can be picked up at either office, can be found in the Carroll County fair book, 4-H fair book and on line at the county fair and Extension websites. Participation fee is $10 per team.

Carroll County Open Horse & Pony Show

An Open Horse and Pony Show, sponsored by the Carroll County Boots ‘N Spurs 4-H Equine Club, will be held Saturday, July 20, at the Carroll Co. Fairgrounds near Milledgeville. The show will be held rain or shine. Enter at the west gate. There will be a lunch stand on the grounds by “Purple Scrappers” Relay for Life Team. The show will be held at the horse arena, located at the west end of the fairgrounds. The arena was built and is sponsored by the Boots ‘N Spurs 4-H Equine Club. Registration starts at 7:30 a.m. at the arena, with the show starting at 8:30 a.m. There are 48 classes to choose from. A stick horse making stand will be available 10:00 – 10:45 a.m. for the stick horse class. A negative Coggins Test is required.

Agronomy Bus Trip To Pick Up in Three Counties

Join us as we travel to the Northern Illinois Agronomy Research Center on July 10, 2013. Weather permitting, the morning program will provide field tours of the research facility and presentations by University of Illinois researchers. Presentations will be moved indoor if inclement weather arises. Transportation is provided for the tours and a meal will be served. This program is free of charge and producers in Northern Illinois are encouraged to attend. This is a great opportunity to meet and question University of Illinois specialist in Northern Illinois.

The University of Illinois Extension Unit 4 in connection with Whiteside County Farm Bureau is sponsoring a bus to the Research Center. This trip is free; however a $5.00 refundable fee is required for registration. The bus will pick up at the Mt. Carroll Farm Bureau, Morrison Farm Bureau and the Wal-Mart Parking lot in Dixon. Gardening Program Offered at O’Dell Public Library in Morrison

Join the Whiteside County Master Gardeners at the O’Dell Public Library in Morrison as we explore a wide range of gardening topics. The four sessions will begin on Friday, June 21 and continue June 28, July 12 and July 19. Come enjoy one or all four topics presented by the Whiteside County Master Gardeners from 2-4pm at the O’Dell Public Library in Morrison.

The first session on June 21 is titled Salad Tube. You will learn to grow all the fixins for your salad in a tube. Other topics include Herb Garden on June 28 where you will learn to grow your own herbs for herbal remedies and seasonings, Color/Mood Enhancers on July 12 will help one improve their outlook with using plants and Bees and Beans on July 19 where you will make your own lip balm and hand cream from nature’s bounty

Elks Free Clinic for Orthopedic Care

A free clinic for assessment of children’s orthopedic care will be Wednesday, June 26, 2013 at Rockford, sponsored by the Illinois Children’s Care Corporation and Elks Lodges of Northwest Illinois. By appointment only, the clinic is from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. Please call 1- for an appointment.

There are no charges for any services at this clinic. The clinic is located at Rockford Orthopedic Associates, the office Dr. Scott Ferry, 324 Roxbury Road. No medical referral is necessary, but physicians are welcome to refer patients to the clinic for a specific reason, or for a second opinion. School nurses are welcome to refer children and families to the clinic.

The Illinois Elks Association, and their Children’s Care Corporation, has been working with physically challenged children since 1928. Seventeen clinic locations are throughout Illinois. There is never a charge for any diagnostic service. The Elks will provide financial assistance to the best of their ability for children needing further treatment or specialty equipment when a family lacks sufficient resources. The Elks have purchased therapy services, corrective shoes, braces, wheelchairs and augmentative communication devices to help children overcome a variety of physical challenges.

There will be a 2nd Quarter meeting on Thursday, June 20, 2013 at the Carroll County Courthouse, 301 North Main Street in Mt. Carroll. The meeting will be held in the small court room which is on the second floor. This meeting will start at 7 p.m. The meeting will be covering many different points. Please, plan on attending and bring another veteran with you. The wives of veterans are also asked to attend.

Dubuque Arboretum & Botanical Gardens Bus Trip June 26

Join the Lee County Master Gardeners on June 26 as they travel to Dubuque, IA to visit the Arboretum and Botanical Gardens at Marshall Park. Free Books in Honor of New Lanark Public Library

Twice-Sold Tales, the used bookstore run by the Friends of the Lanark Public Library, is celebrating the new Lanark Public Library with a Book Bonanza of free books during Old Settlers Days. The event will take place at the Municipal Building, 111-B South Broad St., Lanark, IL

For eight years the Friends have worked to make their vision of a future new library a reality. Popular events like Pies on the Porch, Holiday Shop-Hop Pies Plus, the Rally ‘Round the Library fund drive, and their used bookstore Twice-Sold Tales enabled them to reach their goal. All told, the FLPL contributed over $56,000 to the new Lanark Public Library. In recognition of the dedication of the new library, and to thank the community for its support, free books will be available in front of the Municipal Building June 27, 28, and 29, during regular library hours, courtesy of Twice-Sold Tales.

Twice-Sold Tales, the gently used bookstore, is run by the Friends of the Lanark Public Library; proceeds benefit the Lanark Public Library and its programs and collections. The bookstore is located in The Special Touch’s Unique Mall at 504 IL Route 64 in Lanark. Its hours are 9 am to 5 pm, Tuesday through Friday, and 9 am to 12 pm on Saturday.

The Apocalypse Comes to Mount Carroll

The First Baptist Church of Mt Carroll is proud to present beginning Sunday June 23rd the Left Behind movies series. This critically acclaimed movie series has lots of action, drama, and of course a good Christian message.

This week’s movie, Left Behind, The Movie includes the Rapture, that time when millions of Christians disappear from the mortal earth. The movie does a good job of presenting the turmoil and then the deceit that follows the Rapture to explain this miraculous event.

Kirk Cameron (Fireproof), Louis Gosset Jr. and Gordon Currie (as Satan) star in this epic series.

The movies will begin each Sunday at 5:00 pm. The First Baptist Church is located at 201 S Main St in Mt Carroll. The Sunday Night movies are free and open to the public. Delicious popcorn and refreshments will be served.
