The Sabula Fire Department
The "Island City" of Sabula, Iowa, has a small, but well-trained and equipped group of Fire Fighters and Emergency Medical Technicians. The Fire Protection District was founded in 1894, and the Ambulance District in 1974.
Chief Dan Miller said the Sabula Fire Department is supported by tax dollars, while the Ambulance Dept. is self-supporting. "The Ambulance Dept. receives no tax dollars, but the City insures it and supplies housing. The Ambulance Dept. recently purchased a new Fire Rescue Truck for the Fire Dept., which was very generous of them. We are two separate entities," Chief Miller explained, "but we work together for the betterment of our community."
Chief Miller said the SFD also received a new fire truck in 2004, through a Homeland Security Grant. The equipment in the above photo was purchased with funds awarded by the Dubuque Racing Association (DRA) grant program.
"The equipment (above), including the rescue boat and motor, were received over a 10-year period of applying for them with the DRA," Chief Miller said. "Every year that we have applied, we got a grant. That's over $37,000 in equipment and funding, thanks to the DRA."
