Lincoln Day in SavannaThe Savanna Historical Society joined thousands of Illinoisans on Thursday, Feb. 12 at noon by hosting a commemorative "Bell Ringing" ceremony to honor Abraham Lincoln's Birthday. Bells, sirens, and whistles were sounded in unison for one minute throughout the state. The Savanna Historical Society Museum on Main St. in downtown Savanna will be the permanent home of Gene Wright's famous Civil War Mannequin Collection, which includes Pres. Lincoln (center). Joining Lincoln after the ceremony, dressed in period attire, are Gene Wright (left) and Savanna Mayor Bill Lease. Wright presented the audience with a brief history of the life of Lincoln, and Lease recited Lincoln's "Gettysburg Address." When renovation is completed, the museum will also contain an "HO" scale replica of Savanna's railroad yard, Wayne King and Astronaut Dale Gardner exhibits, a theatre, and an elevator for easy access to the huge tri-level museum complex. "Start believing in your dreams and others will catch the fever," is the SHS motto. Visit www.pacc-news.com for exclusive video of Wright and SHS President John LeCompte discussing the future of the museum. (PA photo & video/Tom Kocal)
