Susan Louella Hilmer

Susan Louella Hilmer passed away peacefully at her home in Capitola on November 19, 2009, surrounded by family and friends, ending her struggle with cancer.

Susan was born in Savanna, Illinois on May 12, 1951. She grew up on a country farm in Mount Carroll, Illinois then moved to the small town of Shannon, Illinois where she attended school, married and had three sons. In 1980, she moved with her small sons to Capitola, California to start a new chapter in her life. With the help and support of her brother that was already there, she dedicated her life to raising her three little boys into the men they are today.

It was always Susan’s dream to become an elementary school teacher. After her children grew up, she worked as a teacher’s aid at Twin Lakes Christian School, and pursued a college degree. While her illness kept her from completing this dream, she loved her journey and cherished the seven and eight year olds she was able to touch.

Susan is survived by her husband John Hilmer of Scotts Valley, father Wilbur Nicol and brothers Jan Nicol of Shannon Illinois, and Kirby Nicol of Capitola. She will be deeply missed by her three sons Chris, Ross and Lance Swalve, along with her seven grandchildren Kaya, Jessica, Marcus, Julian, Cadence, Kaliya, and Mia.

Her family extends a special thank you to the staff of Hospice of Santa Cruz County, which provided so much guidance, support and compassion during Susan’s final days.

A memorial service will be held at Community Covenant Church, located at 2700 El Rancho Drive, Santa Cruz CA 95060 on Saturday November 28th at 2:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family is suggesting contributions be made to Hospice of Santa Cruz County (www.hospicesantacruz.org), in memory of Susan Hilmer.
