As summer quickly approaches (I can hardly believe that school it out this week), there are a number of dates to put on the calendar. First off we will be kicking off our summer events with the Women’s Committee’s Value of Corn in Livestock Feed Promotion on Friday, May 25. We will again be selling hamburgers for 15 cents. Why you may ask?
Depending on the feeding rations, there is approximately 15 cents worth of corn in that hamburger. The moral of the story being just because beef prices go up, that does not mean that corn price is the reason. It takes around 4.67 pounds of corn to produce 1 pound of beef. After the great success we had last year, committee again received a grant from the Illinois Corn Marketing Board to be able to offer hamburgers for 15 cents, which is the value of corn in that hamburger. If corn prices rise 10%, a pound of beef would only increase 6 cents, meaning that one quarter-pound burger would only go up 1.5 cents.
Stop by the Carroll County Farm Bureau office on Friday, May 25 from 11:30 a.m. till 1 p.m. and celebrate National Hamburger Day a couple days early with a 15 cent burger, that’s right the value of corn in that burger. Consumers can up-grade to a meal for only 85 cents more and get the burger, chips, and a drink!
Orders of more than 12 hamburgers, must be made in advance by calling our office at . There are a limited number of hamburgers available.
Saturday, June 16th will mark the Young Leaders’ Harvest for All. The Young Leaders will be meeting shortly to finalize plans and will begin making their phone calls in the next few weeks. Since 2005, Carroll County farmers have donated over $97,774 worth of grain which was then donated in the form of cash to the four food pantries that serve our county. If that doesn’t show generosity and that farmers’ take feeding the world to heart, I don’t know what does.
This summer we will again be doing summer library programs. In June we will be focusing on seeds. Melinda, our ag in the classroom coordinator, and myself will visit the libraries to read a story, do a hands-on activity, and prepare a snack with those in attendance. We will be at the Mount Carroll Public Library on Tuesday, June 12 at 1 p.m.; on Thursday, June 14th the York Township Public Library at 10 a.m. and the Wysox Township Library at 1 p.m.; and on Wednesday, June 20th at the Lanark Public Library at 10 a.m. and the Savanna Public Library at 1 p.m. Contact your library to RSVP by two days prior to their event. Come join us for an hour of fun-filled education!
There is still room available on our Cub’s bus trip. We will be going back to Wrigley Field to see the Cubs play the Arizona Diamondbacks on Friday, July 13. It is a 1:20 game and we will be leaving our office at 9 a.m. Seats are in the reserved terrace infield. Cost is $70 for members and $75 for non-members which includes your game ticket and transportation. Contact our office today to reserve your spot.
Just a reminder that our office will be closed on Monday, May 28th for Memorial Day. We hope everyone has a safe holiday weekend as we kick off the summer!
