James “Jim” Healy IV

James “Jim” Healy IV, age 57, of Hanover, Illinois, died September 29, 2008, at his home. Cremation Rites have been accorded.  A Memorial Gathering will be held from 12:30-1:30 p.m. Saturday, October 4, 2008 at the Hanover United Methodist Church with Pastor Lynne Matthews officiating. A Memorial Service will be held  1:30 p.m. at the church. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in Jim’s honor. Jim was born on October 17, 1950 the son of  James E. and Albina (Pragovich) Healy III in Libertyville, Illinois.  Jim graduated from Evergreen Park High School, Evergreen Park, Illinois, Class of 1968.   On October 17, 1987, Jim married Judy A. Gossage in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Jim loved spending time with his family and cherished every moment.

Jim will be dearly missed by his wife, Judy of Hanover; his daughter, Allerina “Allie” Healy.  Jim is preceded in death by his parents.  

Virginia Ruth Croghan

Virginia Ruth Croghan, age 94, of Savanna, Illinois, died on September 24, 2008 at Big Meadows Nursing Home, Savanna. A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, October 11, 2008 at the First Presbyterian Church with Pastor Michael Wey officiating. Cremation rites have been accorded. A memorial fund has been established in Virginia’s name to Cambell Center for Historic Preservation Studies, 203 East Seminary, Mt. Carroll, Illinois 61053. Virginia was born on October 30, 1913 in Dundee, Illinois, the daughter of Otis A. and Mary L. (Hench) Croghan. She was raised in Savanna Illinois, graduating from the Savanna High School in 1932. She was a 1936 graduate of Frances Shimer Junior College, where she was noted for her basketball prowess.

She then taught at several country schools in Illinois before joining the Navy on August 15, 1944. After serving as a recruit trainer in New York City, she was discharged on January 1, 1946. Virginia received a Bachelor’s degree in Education from the University of Northern Illinois, in 1947 and a Master’s degree from the University of Chicago in 1951.

She taught Junior High English in Crystal Lake, Illinois for twenty five years, and being honored by the naming of the Junior High School Library for her. Virginia was active in the Savanna Community, serving on the Library Board, and participating in the Savanna Women’s Club, Order of the Eastern Star, and the First Presbyterian Church. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Virginia was an ardent advocate of wildlife conservation and historic preservation.

Virginia is survived by a nephew, William (Christine) Croghan of Mt. Vernon, Iowa; a niece, Laura Calderwood of Cedar Falls, Iowa; a great niece, Anna Croghan; and a great nephew, Connett Croghan.

Virginia is preceded in death by two brothers, Donald and Robert Croghan; one sister Dorothy Croghan.

James Arthur Myers Sr.

James Arthur Myers Sr., 85 of Lanark died Monday Sept. 22, 2008 in Maquoketa, IA. Born on Oct. 9, 1922 in Freeport, the son of Arthur W. and Florence (Williams) Myers. On May 10, 1942, James married G. Marion Pollard in Kahokia, MO.

James was a carpenter, and a member of the Berreman Church of God.

He is survived by his daughter Vivian (David) Curley of Mt. Carroll, sons; Steven R. (Carol) Myers of Salisburg, MD, James A. (LeAnne) Myers Jr. of Davis Junction, IL, grandchildren; Donalee (Mrs. James) Yenney, Stephanie (Mrs. David) Ballow, James Damon Scott Myers, Nathan Myers, Stephen Myers, great grandchildren; Brent Yenney, Ashlee Yenney , Kayle Ballow and Saigel Myers, and special friend; Mildred Larson of Lena. He was preceded in death by his wife, mother, father, brother, and one sister.

Funeral Services will be held on Saturday Sept. 27, 2008 at 10:30 A.M. at the Russell-Frank Funeral Home in Lanark with Rev. Robert Phelps of the Berreman Church of God officiating. Visitation will be from 9:30 until time of Service on Saturday. Interment will be at Lanark Cemetery. A memorial fund has been established for the Berreman Church of God.

  • Mildred M. Salier

    Mildred M. Salier, 95 of Lanark died Monday Sept. 22, 2008 in her home.

    She was born Dec. 25, 1912 in Freeport, the daughter of John Michael and Inez (Jones) Lorenz.

    In April of 1940, she married George Salier in Freeport. She and her husband farmed near Lanark until moving into Lanark. She was then employed by Elkay Manufacturing Co. until retiring. She loved flowers and gardening.

    Surviving are her step-son, Allan Salier of Lanark, her step-grandson; Gary Salier of Shannon, two step great-grandsons; Tim Salier of San Antonio, TX, and Ron Salier of Geneseo, and one step great great-grandson, Payton Salier of Geneseo. Also surviving are five close friends, Tammy Alberston, Bill Van Matre, Dale Port, Mike Sweitzer, and Jacob Mari. She was preceded in death by her husband, George Salier, on July 15, 1990, seven brothers, and a step granddaughter Virginia Sailer Dec. 18th 1994.

    Funeral services will be held on Friday, Sept. 26, 2008 at 10:30 A.M. at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens in Freeport with Rev. Dan Rusmisel officiating. Friends may call from 6 to 7 p.m. on Thursday at Russell-Frank Funeral Home in Lanark.

    A memorial has been established in her memory.

    Marjorie Ellen Evans Massey

    Marjorie Ellen Evans Massey, age 97, of Savanna, Illinois, died Monday, September 15, 2008, at the Alverno Nursing Home in Clinton, Iowa. A Memorial Service will be held 11:00 a.m. Monday, September 22, 2008 at the First United Methodist Church, Savanna, Illinois. Inurnment will be in Middlebury Cemetery, Barneveld, Wisconsin, at a later date. Visitation will be held 3:00 ­ 6:00 p.m. Sunday, September 21, 2008, at the Law-Jones Funeral Home, Savanna. Memorials may be given to First United Methodist Church, Savanna, or to the West Carroll Middle School Library in Marge's memory.     Marjorie was born May 9, 1911, the daughter of Herbert Winfield and Margaret (Kenney) Evans in Oneida, Illinois. She graduated from Galesburg High School in 1929. Marjorie graduated from Knox College, Galesburg, Illinois with her B.A. Degree in 1934. Upon completion of her studies at Knox College she enrolled at the University of Wisconsin and graduated with a M.A. in 1943. Marjorie married Wright Ford Massey on August 7, 1948 in Galesburg, Illinois. Ford died on May 20, 1964 in Savanna, Illinois.

    Marjorie was a teacher for twenty-eight years at Fulton Elementary School, Fulton, Illinois, Lyons Junior High, Clinton, Iowa, East High School, Rockford, Illinois, and Savanna Junior High School, Savanna, Illinois. Marj was a member of Delta Delta Delta, Chapter Epsilon, Chapter C.E. of P.E.O., Delta Sigma Rho; honorary forensic fraternity, Carroll County Retired Teachers, and Wednesday Study Club. She was an active member of Savanna Untied Methodist Church; serving as the Superintendent of Nursery Department, on the Church Council of Ministries, Building Committee, Esther Circle, and taught in various departments of Sunday School. Marj served as Trustee of Savanna Public Library for approximately thirty years.

    Marjorie loved to read and give book reviews. She was very proud of Massey Field in Savanna named in her husband's honor. Marjorie always looked forward to summers in Wisconsin with her loving extended family. In recent years she loved to follow the interests of her grandchildren, as well as her son's basketball and volleyball teams. Marjorie was always appreciative of the support of all her family and friends.

    Marjorie is survived by two sons, Mark F. (Kathy) Massey of Clinton, Iowa and Evan W. (Amy) Massey of Galesburg, Illinois; three grandchildren, Evan M. Massey and Sarah Massey of Clinton, Iowa, and Allen Massey of Galesburg.

    Marjorie was preceded in death by her husband Ford and her parents.
