NC Cardinals Beat Big Blue
The switch from non-conference play to College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin competition proved to be a seamless one for the North Central College football team on Saturday, as the eighth-ranked Cardinals scored on their first four possessions and stayed undefeated with a 31-13 triumph over Millikin University (Ill.) at Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium.
North Central (4-0, 1-0 CCIW) now stands as one of just two undefeated teams in the conference, joining sixth-ranked Wheaton College (Ill.)
The Cardinals drove for their final score on a drive which began late in the third quarter. Highlighted by a 30-yard run by Mike Mucha (Jr., Orland Park/Univ. of Illinois) and a 27-yard pass from Kyle Kniss (Sr., Lanark/Eastland-Pearl City) to Jeff Grunwald (So., Tinley Park/Lincoln Way East), North Central put itself in position for a 23-yard field goal attempt. Andrew Barciszewski (Fr., Troy/Triad) split the uprights to nudge the Cardinals' lead up to 31-6 with 14:16 to play in the fourth period.
The Cardinals held a 364-219 advantage in total yards and slowed Millikin's running game to a trickle, as the Big Blue managed just 23 yards on 24 carries. Fanthorpe completed 10 of 14 passes for 150 yards, while Kniss connected on 7 of 13 throws for 81 yards.
The Cardinals travel to face North Park University (1-3, 0-1) at the Holmgren Athletic Complex in Chicago on Saturday. The Vikings lost to Wheaton, 56-28, to open CCIW play. Kickoff at North Park is scheduled for 1 p.m.

Missiles Pull Off Upset Victory Over Galena
MILLEDGEVILLE This week's Class A state rankings were due for a shakeup at press time. The No. 3 Milledgeville Missiles defeated the No. 1 Galena Pirates in come-from-behind fashion Friday night. Milledgeville battled back from a 10-point fourth quarter deficit and defeated visiting Galena 22-16. The game, dubbed as one of the state's best prior to kickoff Friday night, lived up to its lofty pre-game billing.
Running back Jake Workman led Milledgeville to the win, rushing for 104 yards and three touchdowns on 36 carries.
Milledgeville got on the scoreboard first in the opening quarter when Workman got into the endzone on a three-yard run. The Missiles took a 6-0 lead out of the opening quarter.
Galena answered in the second half, knotting the game at 6-6 before the intermission period. Following a 6-6 halftime score, Galena tacked on 10 more points in the third quarter. The Pirates owned a 16-6 advantage at the conclusion of the third period before Milledgeville reeled off 16 unanswered points in a thrilling fourth quarter.
Workman scored on a one-yard run and a two-yard scamper and Milledgeville quarterback Kirk Engelkens added successful two-point conversion passes to cap the touchdowns in the final quarter.
Milledgeville remained undefeated while handling Galena its first loss. The Missiles improved to 6-0 and 5-0 in the Upstate Conference following the win. Galena, left to regroup, dropped to 5-1 overall and 4-1 in the conference after the setback.
Wildcats outlast Pecatonica
PEARL CITY After exiting the first quarter in an 8-8 deadlock, Eastland-Pearl City held visiting Pecatonica scoreless over the next two quarters en route to a 48-21 win.
The Wildcats, which led Pecatonica 15-8 at the half, scored a pair of unanswered touchdowns in the third quarter. Eastland-Pearl City never trailed in the October high school football matchup. The Wildcats managed to break free of a tie on their way to the win.
Carson Walker led Eastland-Pearl City in rushing. Walker the starting quarterback for the Wildcats rushed eight times for 151 yards and one touchdown. He averaged 18.9 yards per carry.
Several players stepped up and led for Eastland-Pearl City on the offensive side. Carcy Swalve scored on runs of 62 and 15 yards for the Wildcats. Jerime Coombes aided the Eastland-Pearl City rushing effort with 68 yards and a touchdown on 12 carries. Gabe Schrader was another valuable rusher for the Wildcats, gaining 36 yards and scoring a pair of touchdowns on four carries.
Through the air, Walker completed 11-of-19 passes for 117 yards. Walker who did not throw a touchdown pass was intercepted twice.
Lawrence Hasken hauled in one catch for 41 yards for the Wildcats. Tony Miller followed with three catches for 33 yards for Eastland-Pearl City.
The Wildcats limited Pecatonica's offensive unit. Brock Day led Pecatonica in rushing with 49 yards via three carries. Kyle Lepak added 46 yards on three totes for the Indians.
Pecatonica starting quarter Dakota Longenecker completed seven-of-15 passes for 81 yards and a touchdown. Jesse Carter was two-for-nine with the air for 38 yards with one touchdown and an interception for Pecatonica out of a reserve role.
Each team had a kick returned for a touchdown. Joe Myers scored on a 95-yard kickoff return for the host Wildcats.
West Carroll Too Much For CICS-Longwood
SAVANNA West Carroll broke open a scoreless game in the second quarter and held CICS-Longwood out of the endzone until the final period Friday night, winning 28-6.
Three different West Carroll players found the endzone. The Thunder controlled the game in huge part to a brusing ground game, rushing for 363 yards on 55 carries.
After a slow start, West Carroll dominated. The Thunder cruised into halftime out in front 22-0.
Neither team struck for points in the opening quarter.
Travis Morhardt led West Carroll in rushing, Morhardt carried seven times for 91 yards. John Allen aided a balanced West Carroll rushing effort with 84 yards on 10 carries. West Carroll quarterback Ethan Baisden followed with 61 yards via eight carries for the Thunder. Six different West Carroll players rushed for positive yardage.
Baisden completed three-of-seven passes for 49 yards and two touchdowns. The West Carroll signal-caller was intercepted once in the non-conference game.
Justin Ferguson was the leading receiver for West Carroll, hauling in two catches for 44 yards and one touchdown. Adam Ferguson grabbed one catch for five yards and a score.
Morhardt put West Carroll on the scoreboard first in the second quarter when he broke free and scored on a 71-yard jaunt. Baisden located Justin Ferguson for scoring tosses of 18 and five yards for two of West Carroll's four touchdowns. Baisden also scored for West Carroll, finding the endzone on a six-yard run.
West Carroll won, despite committing five fumbles two of which were lost. Defensively, West Carroll dominated Longwood.
