The Carroll County Republicans held their annual Fall Roundup at Buck's Barn in Thomson, Saturday night, October 31. The event was a draw on not only local candidates but also many seeking Statewide offices. Senator Dan Rutherford (R-Chenoa), who is also a Republican Candidate for Illinois Treasurer, was the keynote speaker for the event.

Sen. Rutherford is an executive with an international company and an accomplished State Legislator. He was first elected to the Illinois Senate in 2002, following a 10 year term in the House of Representatives where he served as Assistant Republican Leader.

Declining an opportunity to serve in the Reagan White House, Dan stayed in Illinois, working with Governor Jim Thompson as head of the international Business Division of the Illinois Department of Commerce.

At a press conference before the event, Rutherford called for the Illinois Dept. of Corrections to formulate a "strategic long-term plan" that he feels will present the data needed to "get the Thomson Penitentiary open." Rutherford, who represents two state prisons in his senate district, Pontiac and Dwight, has been a strong advocate for the opening of the 8-year-old Thomson Correctional Center.

There was a strong, common message presented by every candidate at the press conference: Illinois must be fiscally responsible, stop spending what they don't have, fill the budget hole, and create a business environment in the state that is second to none, with job creation being the focus.

"This event is a great tradition for the Carroll County Republicans.I'm happy to be a part of it", said Morthland. "We are going to use the excitement from tonight to take back Illinois in 2010!"

In addition to a great night of political hopefuls,170attendeesenjoyed famous fried chicken dinner well known at Buck's Barn; music, a 50/50 raffle, special door prizes and cookbooks, put together by the Carroll County Republican Women for a fundraiser to help Republican candidates next year.

Seeking re-election for Carroll County Clerk/Recorder Brian Woessner and Treasurer Diane Powers both agreed that this night was the beginning of an exciting election year in 2010.

Co-Chairmen Brian Woessner and Venita McConnel were both pleased with the candidates that came to the event, and the crowd. McConnel commented, "Tonight is the beginning of a great year for the Republican Party. No doubt 2010 is our time - we can feel the excitement in the air for our candidates."
