Eastland's Drew Carroll Will Join Clarke College Golf Program

Clarke College Head Men's Golf Coach Jerry Hanson announced today that Drew Carroll, a three-time All-Northwest Upstate Illini Conference (NUIC) performer and 2008 state qualifier at Eastland High School in Lanark, IL, will enroll at the college this fall and join the Crusaders' golf program.
Carroll signed his letter of intent on Monday in Lanark.
"I'm excited that Drew has chosen Clarke," said Hanson. "Drew is committed to the game of golf, is a hard worker and has great leadership skills. He will make a great addition to our program and to Clarke College."
A unanimous first-team all-conference performer last fall for Coach Jason Hill's Cougars, Carroll fired a 3-over par 75 at the NUIC conference meet and finished as the event's runner-up medalist after dropping a playoff.
Carroll captured runner-up medalist honors at the regional golf tournament after carding a 78, and qualified for the Class 1A state tournament after firing a 38-4078 at sectionals.
Carroll also competed in baseball, basketball and football at Eastland, picking up three varsity letters in golf. He will pick up his third varsity letter in baseball following the completion of the current season.
Carroll earned all-conference baseball honors as a junior when he led the team in hitting with a .488 batting average.
A two-year member of the National Honor Society, Carroll was a member of the 3.5 Club and High Honor Roll. He was chosen to attend the "Lead" America Congressional Student Leadership Conference in Chicago and was a Wendy's High School Heisman Award winner.
Carroll was active in numerous activities and organizations at Eastland, including student council, Servant Leadership Core Group and FCCLA. He was a class officer and was active at St. Wendelin Catholic Church.
In addition to an athletic talent award for golf, Carroll is also the recipient of a Clarke College VIEW Leadership Scholarship.
The son of Clark and Lori Carroll, of Lanark, Drew will pursue a degree in physical therapy.
HIGH SCHOOL SOFTBALL
West Carroll Clamps Pearl City
West Carroll shut out Pearl City 10-0 in five innings on Wednesday (April 7) in a high school softball matchup between two longtime rivals. Tiffany Cole was strong from the mound for West Carroll. The West Carroll pitcher tossed a shutout in commanding fashion. Cole fanned five batters and allowed two hits in a dominating performances. The Pearl City batters struggled to catch up to the West Carroll hurler's pitches.
Jordan Kasbohm led West Carroll offensively. Kasbohm was perfect at the plate, finishing 3-for-3 from the dish with two triples and a double. She also collected two RBI.
More than one West Carroll batted stepped up and contributed in the shutout win. Chelsey Sipe delivered two hits for West Carroll. Jennesa Miller offered up a game-high three RBI for the Thunder.
Engelkens, Missiles blank Freeport
Milledgeville/Polo scored a pair of runs in the first inning and got a tremendous effort from pitcher Keali Engelkens in a 6-0 win over host Freeport in the Freeport Softball Tournament. The Milledgeville/Polo pitcher dominated Freeport hitters. Engelkens fanned 11 Freeport batters. She was dominant from the circle in more than one inning, striking out the side in both the third and fifth innings.
Rick Lincoln - coached Milledgeville/Polo got going offensively in the top half of the first inning when Engelkens singled. Engelkens and Alexis DawTyne both scored in the opening frame as Milledgeville/Polo took an early 2-0 lead. The Missiles jumped out in front early on and never trailed en route to the win.
Sarah Kortemeier was the losing pitcher for Freeport, hurling a complete game for the Pretzels. Kortemeier allowed six runs, two of which were earned.
Missiles Finish Second in Freeport Tourney
Playing its fifth game in two days, the Milledgeville/Polo softball team came up short in the title game of the Freeport Softball Tournament on Saturday afternoon. Keali Engelkens pitched well but it wasn't enough to allow Milledgeville/Polo to post the win. Metamora, a team Milledgeville/Polo had defeated in pool play, managed to get past the Missiles. Outlasting Milledgeville/Polo in close fashion, Metamora posted a hard-fought 2-1 win.
Britt Woodin drove in Milledgeville/Polo's lone run when she hit an infield single that allowed Engelkens to score. The Milledgeville/Polo pitcher had reached base following a single of her own.
Metamora, which scored a run in both the first and fifth innings, turned a double play to end any hopes Milledgeville/Polo had of manufacturing any more runs.
Milledgeville/Polo went 4-1 in the tournament. The Missiles carried a 9-1 overall record and 2-0 NUIC-East mark out of the talent-heavy high school softball tourney. Head coach Rick Lincoln guides the Milledgeville/Polo softball team.
Host Freeport fell in the consolation game of its own tournament.
HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL
Milledgeville/Polo Pounds West Carroll
Mike Allspaugh pitched Milledgeville/Polo past West Carroll 12-2 Thursday in a key high school baseball matchup. Milledgeville/Polo defeated West Carroll in five innings. Opening the game on an offensive tear, Milledgeville/Polo plated four runs in the first inning.
Kyle Kness was the offensive catalyst for Milledgeville/Polo. Kness had two doubles and four RBI. Matt VanOosten, Matt Scholl and Greg Fredricks had two hits and two RBI apiece for the winning team.
In another area high school baseball game played on Thursday, Warren/Stockton outlasted Orangeville 2-1 in eight innings. Starting pitcher Jared McNutt struck out 14 batters as he recorded the win from the mound for Warren/Stockton. Riley Kubatzke absorbed the loss for Orangeville. Kubatzke had 11 strikeouts out of his starting pitcher's role.
Visiting Black Hawk handled host Highland on Saturday, defeating the Cougars 4-0 in an Arrowhead Conference baseball game. Highland was limited offensively, finishing with just three hits.
The Cougars struggled to put the bat on the bat, exiting the season-opener with 10 strikeouts.
Dan Dean was the leading hitter for Eastland, tagging two hits. Jared Berlage was saddled with the pitching loss for the Cougars.
Black Hawk rolled even more in the second game, defeating the Cougars 10-0.
Highland had four hits in the second and final game of the Arrowhead Conference doubleheader.
New License Year Underway
Anglers and hunters are reminded that the new license year for Illinois fishing, hunting, and sportsman combination licenses began April 1. Those licenses are available from DNR Direct license and permit vendors, online through the IDNR web site (www.dnr.state.il.us), or by calling 1-888-6PERMIT (1-). By going online, license buyers can use American Express, Discover, MasterCard, Visa, or E-Check and print their own license or receipt and the system is available 24 hours a day. The 2009 annual licenses are valid through Mar. 31, 2010 unless otherwise noted.
Youth Turkey Hunt Closes
The 2009 Illinois Spring Youth Wild Turkey Season closed with a preliminary harvest total of 617, down slightly from 638 in 2008. The number of birds taken during the youth hunt this spring was an increase over the harvests seen in 2006 (525) and 2007 (579). The South Zone harvest this spring was 254 compared with 244 last year. The North Zone harvest declined somewhat from 394 last year to 363 this season.
The top five counties for youth turkey harvest in the South Zone this spring were: Jefferson (21), Wayne (21), Williamson (19), Randolph (17), and Johnson (12). The top five counties for youth turkey harvest this year in the North Zone were: Calhoun (23), Fulton (21), Cass (19), Pike (19), and Adams (17). The 2009 Spring Youth Wild Turkey Hunt was conducted on Mar. 28-29 in the South Zone and April 4-5 in the North Zone.

Resident firearm/muzzleloader deer applications
Resident Illinois deer hunters can apply for the first lottery drawings for 2009 Illinois firearm and muzzleloader-only deer season permits through the IDNR web site at http://dnr.state.il.us. Click on the DNR Direct button on the home page to apply using a credit card. Application forms in PDF format are also available on the IDNR web site. The first lottery drawings for firearm deer permits and muzzleloader-only season deer permits are for Illinois residents only. The deadline to apply for the first lottery drawing for 2009 firearm deer permits and muzzleloader-only deer permits is April 30. Resident hunters can apply in both the firearm and muzzleloader-only lotteries. The 2009 firearm seasons are Nov. 20-22 (first season) and Dec. 3-6 (second season). The 2009 muzzleloader-only season is Dec. 11-13.
Trout season
A reminder that the 2009 Illinois spring trout season opened on Satruday, April 4. To legally take trout, anglers must have a valid fishing license and inland trout stamp. Super Saturday
The Illinois State Museum in Springfield invites children to "Go Green" throughout the year with tips and tricks about how to reduce, reuse, and recycle. The ISM "Super Saturdays" program on Sat., April 11 from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. encourages kids to "Make Every Day Earth Day." Activities are ongoing throughout the day, taking 30 to 45 minutes to complete, and feature take-home crafts. Parents and families are encouraged to participate. Admission is free. Becoming an Outdoors Woman Workshop
Women interested in the outdoors are encouraged to sign up for the annual IDNR "Becoming an Outdoors Woman" workshop on June 12-14 at the Lorado Taft Field Campus in Oregon, Illinois. BOW is designed to give women introductory experiences and instruction in various outdoor activities, ranging from the shooting sports to outdoor recreation to nature crafts and skills. Program instructors emphasize the basics in instruction while providing information on equipment, associated clubs or organizations, and additional training opportunities. The cost includes housing, meals, class instruction, use of equipment in classes, giveaways, and more.
