Highland Names New Head Basketball Coach
Following the resignation of head men’s basketball coach Zac Roman on May 3, Highland Community College officials announced today that Nathan Courtney has been chosen as the new head coach for the Cougars. He comes to Highland from Meridian Community College, Mississippi, where he recently served as head coach.
Courtney, also a five-year assistant coach for the nationally-recognized Indian Hills Community College basketball program in Ottumwa, Iowa, has an impressive winning record, including two National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region XI Championships and two trips to the national tournament.
“We feel very fortunate that Nathan has accepted the head basketball coaching position. I have no doubt he will continue the tremendous success of Highland Cougar basketball on the national level of the NJCAA,” said Athletic Director Pete Norman.
Courtney recruited, developed and coached 35 student-athletes that later went on to Division I programs, several of which become professional players. Additionally, the players on Courtney’s teams have an academically-sound reputation with a 98 percent graduation rate during his 12 years of coaching.
“Coach Courtney’s experience fits with our tradition of excellence both in the classroom and on the basketball court,” said Norman. “Nathan, his wife and family are anxious to join our community and Cougar nation.”
Courtney attended the University of Dubuque where he was a member of the men’s basketball team. During this time, he started for the team during three of his four years, and served as team captain and representative on the college’s student-athlete advisory committee. He also possesses a Master of Arts in Physical Education with a teaching and coaching emphasis from the University of Northern Iowa.
