FLORENCE STATION -- Judith B. Bastian, 67, died Thursday, June 20, 2013, surrounded by her family. Judy was born in Monroe, Wisconsin, on October 31, 1945, to Oscar J. and Anna Marie (Steiner) Wyss. She lived in New Glarus, Wisconsin, until moving with her family to a farm west of Lena at age 2.

Judy graduated from Lena-Winslow High School, Rockford Memorial Hospital School of Radiologic Technology and Ottawa University in Ottawa, Kansas.

She married Merek Bastian at the United Church of Christ in Elroy on April 5, 1969. They lived on and farmed the home farm near Florence Station throughout their marriage.

Judy worked at Rockford Memorial Hospital, at South Coast Community Hospital in South Laguna, California, and for 41 years at FHN Memorial Hospital where she worked as a Radiologic Technologist, Nuclear Medicine Technologist and as the Imaging Department Director for 24 years. During those years she led the implementation of medical imaging technologies new to FHN including echocardiography, diagnostic ultrasound, nuclear cardiology, CT, MRI and PET scanning. She was dedicated to her work and devoted to her family.

Judy especially enjoyed shopping with her daughter, the performing arts, flowers and traveling. And she felt fortunate to have traveled throughout the United States and abroad.

After retirement, she spent summers planting and tending her flower gardens. She enjoyed decorating and entertaining, especially during the holidays.

Judy is survived by her husband Merek of Florence Station and daughter Debra (fiancé John Booth) of Chicago; her sister Ruth (Albert) Thede of Shannon, nephew Jason (Dawn) Thede of Shannon and niece Joy (Brad) Lott of Oakland Township, Michigan. She is also survived by great nephews and nieces Jake Thede, Bailey Thede, Olivia Lott, Collin Lott and Brooklin Lott; her father-in-law Leonard Bastian of Freeport; brother-in-law Linden (Deb) Bastian, sisters-in-law Jalinda Bastian, Melissa (Arnie) Nebelsick and Janelle (Rick) McLean. She was preceded in death by her parents, grandparents, mother-in-law and a nephew.

Visitation will be held Tuesday, June 25, from 4 to 7 p.m., at Burke-Tubbs Funeral Home in Freeport. A celebration of life will be held Wednesday, June 26, at 10:30 a.m., also at Burke-Tubbs Funeral Home. Pastor Steve Aram will officiate. Burial will take place in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. Marcella G. Johnson, 80, of Mount Carroll passed away on Sunday, June 16, 2013 in her home. A memorial mass has been scheduled at 10:30 am on Wednesday, June 19, 2013 at Saint John and Catherine Catholic Church in Mount Carroll. Rev. Father Dennis Atto will be officiating. There will be no visitation, and cremation rites have been accorded. The Morrison Chapel of the Bosma-Renkes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Hospice of the Rock River Valley and Mass Offerings.

Marcella was born on February 3, 1933 in Taunton, MN to Henry and Elizabeth (Neels) DePyper. She was educated in the country schools in Minnesota and Illinois and was a 1951 graduate of Prophetstown High School. On April 12, 1952, she married Dwight D. Johnson in Tampico, IL. He passed away on August 25, 2009. Marcella and her husband farmed in rural Carroll and Whiteside counties. Marcella was a member of St. John and Catherine Catholic Church, and enjoyed spending winters in Florida, time with family and grandchildren, and socializing with friends. It brought her great joy to prepare and deliver meals during harvest. She was an avid baker and her specialties were baking pies and decorating cakes.

Survivors include one daughter, Melissa (Tom) Bryant – Morrison, IL; two sons, Michael D. (Dawn) Johnson – Chadwick, IL and Brandon (Robyn) Johnson – Byron, IL; six grandchildren, Brooke Johnson, Abby (fiance’ Andrew Sturtevant) Johnson, Jenessa (Alex) Shahandeh, Heather (Jade) Smith, Ashton Johnson, Joshua Johnson; one great granddaughter, Kaylee Smith; one sister, Connie (Mike) O’Mara – Haddonfield, NJ; one brother, Don (Sandy) De Pyper – Davenport, IA; three special grand dogs, Zoey, Brinkley, and Libby; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.

Vincent Vesely

Vincent “Vince” Vesely, age 78, of Hanover, Illinois passed away Sunday, June 16, 2013 at home in the loving care of his family. A funeral service will be held 2:00 p.m. Thursday, June 20, 2013 at the Law-Jones Funeral Home, Hanover. Visitation will be held prior to the service at the Funeral Home from 12:00 noon - 2:00 p.m. Thursday, June 20, 2013. Inurnment will take place at a later date in Log Church Cemetery, Hanover. Memorials may be given in Vince’s memory for the Log Church Cemetery Association.
