The EPC offense was hitting on all cylinders on Friday night in Savanna as they handed West Carroll a thirty four point loss on Senior Night.

The Wilcatz got on the board with four scores in the opening quarter. The first two were runs of twenty and three yards by Ramsay Truckenmiller. EPC’s third score was a twenty eight yard scamper by Eric Schaney and Shawn Larak found the end zone from three yards out to make the first quarter score EPC 27 and West Carroll nothing. Schaney again found paydirt in the second quarter from two yards out and Ben Thomas completed the scoring for the Catz on a thirty eight yard run to give EPC a 40-0 halftime lead.

Neither team put points on the board in the third and West Carroll managed to finally crack the scoreboard in quarter four on a Nick Hughes to Trevor Jones scoring strike to keep the Thunder from being shut out.

Thomas led the ground attack for EPC, racking up one hundred fifty five yards while Larak added eighty one yards on just four carries. Shawn Magill led the Thunder ground game with thirty two yards.

Polo Top Missiles In A Wild One

If you liked plenty of scoring, Polo was the place to be on Friday night as the host Marcos and the visiting Missiles combined to score eighty four points with Polo taking the 63-21 victory. The Marcos jumped out to a quick six to nothing lead but Milledgeville countered with a one yard touchdown run by Daniel Walker. The two point conversion put the Missiles up eight to six.

Polo then reeled off twenty two straight points to take control. The Missiles got back on the board with a thirty nine yard scoring strike from QB Kameron DawTyne to Jordan Harris and the Marcos responded with a TD pass from their QB John Hanlon to Brian Cavanaugh. DawTyne picked off a Hanlon pass in the third and returned it for a score to close the gap to nineteen points but that was a close as Milledgeville would get.

Polo’s Ivan Grogan picked a DawTyne pass and returned it eighty five yards for a score. The Marcos has four running back pile up one hundred or more yards and had two interception returns of forty and eight five yards.

Morrison Mustangs Begin State Title Defense

By Bill Popkin

The number one-ranked 2A Morrison Mustangs began their state title defense against the Kewanee Boilermakers at Kewanee on Friday, August 24. In a hard fought battle, the Mustangs came away with a 14-0 victory.

With only 3:25 gone in the first period of action, Danny Willis scampered into the end zone from 30 yards out to cap a 7-play 70 yard drive. The extra point was good, and the Mustangs led 7-0 early in the contest.

The only other scoring that took place in the game was in the second frame of action. After a short Boiler punt, the Mustangs took over on their own 49 yard line. Four plays later, Alex Volckmann sprinted in from 19 yards out give Morrison a solid 14-0 advantage at intermission.

The Boiler’s best scoring opportunity came midway through the third period when they drove down to the Mustang 21 yard line. Brock Deter then picked off an errant Kewanee pass near the end zone to thwart the drive. Morrison prevailed 14-0 in their opening game.

The Mustang rushing attack was led by Willis-96 yards on 12 carries, Deter-88 yards on 13 attempts, and Volckmann- 51 yards on 8 tries.

Morrison also won the Frosh-Soph contest 28-7. The next game for the Mustangs will be a huge match-up against Newman at Sterling on September 1. Varsity game-time is 7:30 P.M. Plan to attend. It should be exciting!

Lanark Beaver Football Class of 1967 and 1968 to be Honored

Northwest Illinois Sports Hall of Fame has selected the 1967 and 1968 Lanark Fighting Beaver Football Team as one of their Honor Team’s for this year’s inductee class. The Northwest Illinois Sports Hall of Fame annually honors area individuals and teams that have made lasting contribution through their success and or service to general athletics in Northwest Illinois. The ceremony when these two teams will be inducted is October 13th, at Manny’s in Savanna IL at 6:30PM.

These two Lanark teams, under Coach Wally Isham and his staff were stellar. They won the Northwestern Illinois Conference championships these two years, and achieved a combined 17-1 Record. (9-0 1967 and 8-1, 1968). These teams, and Coach Isham, were known for their “hard nosed,” disciplined football that has been idealized in area football for years. Coach Isham was coach at Lanark High School from 1964 to 1974, and is planning to return for the event.

This ceremony is open to the public, and will be held at Manny’s banquet room with a catered meal. The cost is $20, and advanced reservations are required. Tickets can be purchased up to the time of the banquet but seating is limited. Members and families of the ’67 and 68 team are asked to submit reservations by Sept. 4th. Reservations can be made by contacting Kraig Kniss at or Brian Reusch at or via email to .

NISHF Meeting

The Northwest Illinois Sports Hall of Fame Committee will meet on Wednesday, September 5, 2012 at Manny’s Pizza in Savanna. An “attitude adjustment” will be held at 5:45 with dinner at 6:30 p.m. and the meeting to follow. All plans and ticket information will be considered for the 2012 Induction Banquet, planned for October 13th at Manny’s Pizza in Savanna.
