If it had been the twenty-first century, Mary Melugin would have been bopping across the prairie with ear buds plugged into her head while lengthily texting or twittering more than the birds in the grove of trees she’d just passed. But it was only a few decades into the nineteenth century with little technology in everyday life.

Main St. Commons (the old Kraft Building) hosted their first open mic night, “5 Minutes of Fame on Market & Main,” to a full house of arts enthusiasts. There was plenty of live music from local talent, including (top) The Briarpatch Symphony. The trio consists of (l to r) Jim Vancko, Oregon, on stand-up bass, mandolin player Scott Rische of Galena, and singer/guitarist Ray Rose from Chadwick.

MOUNT CARROLL – Approximately 50 people turned out for the first 5 Minutes of Fame Open Mic, held at Main Street Commons, formerly the Kraft Building, at Main and Market Streets in Downtown Mount Carroll last Thursday night.

Acts included professional musicians, local players, and a little poetry. Twice nominated Bluegrass Bass Player of the Year Forrest Carter Rische came out with his wife, as well as with the Briar Patch Symphony. Ray Rose and the End of the Road Band played and entertained all night long. Ryan Getz, who won at Mayfest’s music competition last summer also played, as did Brandon McCaskey, Randy Stadle, and A Silent Discourse, a duo out of Lanark that plays mostly in Freeport. There was also some group participation poetry by Marc Smith and some tunes from Mount Carroll local Dave Cuckler.

The event, which will occur on every second Thursday of the month, was sponsored by the Main Street Art Guild, and is free and open to the public. Anyone with questions should call .
