Tax Time Draws to a Close

tax team 2.tif

Carroll County Tax-Aide volunteers enjoy working in the newly remodeled Carroll County Senior Center in Mount Carroll. Volunteers are (left to right, front row): Diane Frese, Vicky Trager, Char Daehler, & Gladys Larem; (second row) Barb Anderson, Frank Nester, Eric Trager, Mary Ann Hutchison, & Donna Svoboda. Not pictured are volunteers Anne Haliotis, Howard Kennedy, Sandi Law, and Lori Brummer.

Tax Counselors are available to help low to moderate income taxpayers at the Senior Center until April 13. To schedule an appointment for taxes or transportation to the Senior Center, call or toll-free . Counselors are available on Wednesday and Friday mornings.

The IRS also reminds taxpayers that they do not send unsolicited e-mails about tax accounts, tax situations or personal tax issues. If you receive such an e-mail, most likely it is a scam. IRS impersonation schemes flourish during filing season. These schemes may take place via phone, fax, internet sites, social-networking sites and particularly e-mail.

Many impersonations are identity theft scams that try to trick victims into revealing personal and financial information. Some have links which, when clicked, download malicious code that infects your computer or directs you to a bogus form or site posing as the IRS. As always, remain cautious.

AARP Tax-Aide program provides free tax assistance and preparation throughout the country to low and moderate income taxpayers, with special attention to seniors, age 60 and older. The Carroll County Senior Center joins the Internal Revenue Service and the AARP Foundation in offering this free tax assistance to the local community.

In correlation with National Nutrition Month®, the Morrison Community Hospital Dietary Department is sponsoring a community food drive. The food drive will benefit the Morrison Friends Food Pantry. “We felt that there was no better way to celebrate National Nutrition Month® than to give back to the community. Times are difficult and there a lot of people in need,” said Dody Ogburn, Director of Dietary Services. “Plus, the food drive will come at an opportune time with Easter quickly approaching.”

Non perishable items may me dropped off in the Morrison Community Hospital front lobby from March 19th – March 23rd. Schilling: ‘Promote Manufacturing Here in Illinois’

QCA Manufacturer to Produce Industrial Hand Tools to Aid U.S. Navy

The Quad Cities and Galesburg have received some good news.

Honsa Ergonomic Technologies, Inc. in Milan, IL has received a new naval contract to build American-made tools, the largest naval contract of its kind. Honsa will be upgrading some of the U.S. Navy’s industrial hand tools with their ergonomic technology in an effort to improve workers’ safety and health. The new tools will be provided to the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard for their ship recycle program—the PSNS will be utilizing Honsa chipping hammers to aid the recycling process.

Congressman Bobby Schilling (R-Colona) visited Honsa on Friday as Honsa CEO Thomas Honsa announced this major victory for the area, saying this was a great win for this area.

“Several local machine shops and foundries will benefit from this contract,” Honsa said. “We are grateful for the opportunity to provide the U.S. Navy with a quality product. We look to start production and ship within three weeks.”

In addition to the creation of several new jobs at Honsa, this contract will result in more business for Fosbinder Fabrication and Boymun Machine Company, two machine shops in the Quad Cities. It will also provide new work for Aluminum Castings Co., a foundry in Galesburg.

Congressman Schilling said he is excited to see this contract benefit the community.

“Manufacturing plays a vital role in this area’s economy,” Schilling said. “We have the best workers, the best technology, and the best infrastructure. We need to continue to do everything we can to promote manufacturing here in Illinois. Innovators like Thomas Honsa are critical to the future of this great nation.”

Vicky Miller, Director at the Illinois Procurement Technical Assistance Center at Black Hawk College, praised Congressman Schilling for his record of promoting small business growth.

“Small businesses in this area have received wonderful and meaningful support from Congressman Schilling,” Miller said. “Schilling understands how important Small Businesses’ role is in job creation and has helped them with providing a pro-growth environment favorable to their industries. He has been a tireless advocate for economic expansion in this area.”

Nurses Notes

By Karen Wilhelms | Eastland School Nurse

Parents of K, 2nd and 6th grade students: Many school dental forms still have not been submitted to the nursing office. These forms must be received by May 15th and can be dated 18 months prior to that date. If your child has seen the dentist; please contact the dental office and get a copy sent to the school. If your child has not seen the dentist, please make an appointment to complete this mandated state requirement and get it submitted before the deadline. State law dictates that report cards are to be held if this report is note received. If you have any questions, contact the school nurse at .

Here’s a reminder that if your child received a hearing or vision referral, to please get your child seen. Academic success in school is very closely tied to how your child sees or hears. The sooner that this can be taken care of, the sooner your child can achieve and succeed in school. If you need some financial assistance with the vision exam, please contact me as I have some assistance available. Please feel free to call me if you have any questions, in the morning I am at the Middle School, and in the afternoon at the Elementary School, .

Also as a reminder, March is Poison Prevention month, I will be in the PreK-2 classrooms with a video called, “Stop and Ask First.” This video stresses that children ask parents if items they are unfamiliar with, not touch the item, but rather ask the parent if it is safe for them. Many poisonous items in our world look very similar to items that are safe for kids to handle. Please use caution in the handling of poisonous items at home, household cleaning supplies, paint, varnish, antifreeze, and other common household poisons.

Highland’s Boyer Colloquium to Feature ‘Endgame’ Author Derrick Jensen

The 2012 Boyer Colloquium, “Endgame: An Evening with Derrick Jensen,” will begin at 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 19, 2012, in the Highland Community College Student/Conference Center. This event is free and open to the public.

Jensen, an award-winning author and environmental activist, will discuss the attention-getting premises of his non-fiction work “Endgame,” including why industrial civilization is not sustainable and how economics dictate social policies. Not one for coddling his audiences, Jensen offers a revolutionary message of change capable only through a dramatic restructuring of society. As reviewed in the San Francisco Chronicle, Jensen is a “formidable thinker unafraid of showing us, with unsettling precision, the countless ways we are allowing ourselves and our planet to be killed.”

As a previously-named Press Action Person of the Year, Jensen is the author of 20 books and was honored as one of Utne Reader’s “50 Visionaries Who are Changing Your World.” He is also a contributing writer for numerous publications including Orion, Audubon and The Sun. As a former educator, he has addressed diverse audiences from college students to prison inmates.

The Boyer Colloquium, an annual event sponsored by the late Dr. M. E. Boyer, was created in 1994 to help students and communities understand the importance of the inter-relationships between ethics, economics, and ecology. True to this mission, Jensen’s improvisational style and unconventional approach easily weave together seemingly unrelated issues for a moving audience experience. The Boyer Colloquium Committee believes that if communities comprehend the issues, the history of previous decisions and ramifications of prior actions, they will be better positioned to make informed decisions.

For more information, a full history of the colloquium can be found by visiting www.highland.edu/boyer. Campus maps are available on the Highland website and directional signage will be posted on campus the evening of the event.

Entrepreneur & INNOVATORS Meet

Please note this is the 4th Thursday of the month, the new date for the monthly meetings of the new Entrepreneur and Innovators group. They will meet at 6:30 pm on Thursday, March 22 at Carroll Industrial Molds, 202 N. Washington St. in Milledgeville, IL.

Carroll Industrial Molds was founded in 1986 by Craig Dusing, President. They grew from an 800 sq. ft. to a 36,000 sq. ft. facility. CIM serves a variety of customers around the world in the transportation, industrial, and consumer industries.

Presenter is Dan Nederhoff, President of Milledgeville State Bank. Round-table discussion topic: How to find and keep good employees. Where do you look? Do you use an online job search site? How do you hold onto a good employee once you find them?

Why the new name? Some members may not fit the textbook definition of an “entrepreneur” or “inventor”. Some are community leaders looking to assist, promote or encourage business owners and inventors. Others are business owners that have been in operation for many years, but are looking for new ways of doing things or ways to keep up with the times. So, “inventors” has changed to “innovators” to encompass inventors and a wider range of business and community leaders.

Unconstitutional Gun Registration Practice Challenged

Since 1995, the City of Rockford has required anyone that wants to purchase a handgun in the city to fill out a registration card at the point of purchase. which is then forwarded to the city. The practice has gone unnoticed for the past 17 years, but is being revisited with the current atmosphere of interest in government accountability.

“This gun registration law within the City of Rockford must be eliminated without condition,” said David Hale, Rockford Tea Party Coordinator. “We do not seek to repeal and replace it - we seek to have this unconstitutional violation of our 2nd Amendment rights eliminated completely. We are calling on the Rockford City Council and Mayor Morrissey to immediately strike this law/ordinance from the books.”

The justification for gun control laws, especially in Illinois, is generally that the laws will be a crime deterrent. But statistics prove otherwise, and Rockford’s crime rate statistics are no different.

“After 17 years on the books, gun crime and violent crime have increased to make Rockford one of the most violent cities in the state,” Hale stated. “There is no justification for the law in Rockford, and no need for City leaders to continue to allow this law to remain on the books.”

An Unconventional Professor Featured in Film

Another film in the WORK series at the Savanna Museum and Cultural Center in conjunction with the Smithsonian Exhibition, The Way We Worked, will be titled “Professor”. It will be shown at 2:30 pm at the museum at 406 Main Street in downtown Savanna, IL on Saturday, March 24th and Sunday, March 25th.

An Iowa University professor challenges his students, the university that employs him, and the purpose of teaching a volatile subject like the Holocaust. Rabbi Jay Holstein tells his students he is annoying and cranky, adding that some will not succeed in his classes. This film might show that one man can change the world, even from his closet he calls an office. Approx. 60 minutes long.

The Smithsonian Exhibition continues until April 7th with hours from 2:00 to 6:00 pm, Wednesdays through Sundays at the museum. Several businesses also have provided displays that highlight the way their employees work.

The film is presented in part by the Savanna Historical Society, the Illinois Humanities Council and the Smithsonian Institution. Admission is free, donations are accepted.

SHS Gets Energy Grant for Museum Windows, Geothermal Units

The Savanna Historical Society NFP is pleased to announce that they’ve received a grant of $50,100 for additional energy efficient improvements to the Savanna Museum and Cultural Center. The grant was awarded by Blackhill Hills Resource and Conservation District of Rock Falls and adds to to an earlier award of $42,624 for Energy Efficency Community Block (EECBG) funds that assist communities and local governments with projects promoting energy conservation at community facilities. The new grant supports the Society’s efforts to replace facade windows and adds 2 geothermal HVAC units inside the Center.

The Center’s facelift replaces windows in the former Allied furniture building. According to Al Geistkemper, former owner of Allied, the windows were boarded up in the late 1950’s after a storm caused damage to the windows. Until the storm made it necessary for Al to board them up, the large windows held the grand displays of furniture that help bring in his customers.

The Center’s new windows will carry on Allied’s tradition of grand displays. In total, almost 600 sq ft, of window displays on the second floor will invite visitors to the railroad stories exhibits and to see the Galley of Civil War Gallery soldiers on the third floor.

“The Society believes strongly in building energy savings into the new museum,” said Board President John Pokornik. The facade windows replace single pane glass with new high performance low e glass and combine it with a geothermal HVAC system installed in 2010. An earlier EECBG grant added storefront windows and doors, 50 LED track light fixtures and 3 energy efficient hot water heaters. The hot water heaters are supplied with geothermally heated and cooled water for additional energy and cost savings.

“A geothermal system is a big ticket item but with outstanding volunteers, great community support and a variety of grants, we are getting the job done,” said Pokornik.

The first step was for volunteers to remove the old Allied 1 Million BTu boiler. Then, in 2010 a geothermal easement was donated by next door neighbor John Lieberg so the geo wells could be dug. The Society combined its funds with a $44,000 incentive from the Association of Illinois Electric Coops and dug ten 300’ geothermal wells to feed the HVAC system. A total of 6 geo units are needed to heat and cool the 16,000 sq ft building and, with help from an Illinois Tourism Attraction Development grant, the Society presently has two operating units.

The new EECBG award adds two geo units at a cost of $20,200 each. One unit will be installed on the second floor where five area railroad clubs are building a 1,000 sq ft replica of Savanna in its railrailroad heyday. The high quality model will be part of a larger exhibit that is underway.

The second unit wil be installed on the south half of first floor, where the Society is currently sponsoring a Film Festival as part of its Smithsonian “The Way We Worked” exhibit until April 7th. Until now, the Society has used space heaters to heat the temporary theatre area during the film festival.

This week the new geo unit will be installed and will provide heating and cooling comfort for film festival go-ers. A local favorite, the film “Workin’ on the Railroad” is shown every weekend of the exhibit. The film, provided by a grant from the Illinois Humanities Council, is a professionally-produced oral history featuring Savanna’s retired railroaders. As exhibits are developed on the second floor, the film will be shown to visitors arriving to experience the railroad stories.

The City of Savanna is the sponsor of the application on behalf of the Savanna Historical Society NFP . The City Council unanimously approved the amendment to extend the EECBG grant at its meeting on March 13th. William Tonne, Chairman of the Council, signed the Amendment on behalf of Blackhawk Hills RC & D.
