Ralph Fletcher Visits West Carroll

WC Ralph Fletcher.tif

Author Ralph Fletcher spoke to students at the West Carroll Primary School on Thursday, April 4th. Fletcher has published over 40 books, mostly getting ideas from his family and his childhood. Fletcher urged students to invent, add stuff, and even lie when you write. “A good story isn’t just what happens inside you,” Fletcher said. Fletcher has been a mentor to teachers and young writers everywhere. More information can be found on www.ralphfletcher.com (PA photo/Lynnette Forth)

On Thursday, April 4th, staff developer and children’s book author, Ralph Fletcher, visited West Carroll. Amber Findlay, Christa Curley, Janell Hartman, and Keta Foltz wrote a grant through the Illinois Reading Council to fund this event. The grant, worth $3,287, funded the author visit as well as teaching materials used to prepare for this experience.

Teachers from both the primary and middle school participated in an on-line book club using the book, Boy Writers: Reclaiming Their Voices by Ralph Fletcher.

Meanwhile, at the middle school, Pat Foltz launched a “Boy Writer” lunch club for 7th grade students. The grant money provided those students with another book written for boy writers titled Guy-Write: What Every Guy Writer Needs to Know by Ralph Fletcher. When Mr. Fletcher spent the morning at the primary school and afternoon at the middle school. He had a special lunch session with Mr. Foltz’s “Boy Writer” lunch club.

The teachers in the West Carroll schools work tirelessly to provide positive reading and writing experiences for the students year round. Their program, which utilizes “Rocky the Writing Raccoon” donated by Facemakers, Inc., includes summer writing bags, author visits, Wear a Word Day, and a special writing day for 1st graders at the end of the year. These programs are funded through PTO box tops, a book fair at West Carroll Primary School (April 15 – 18), and an Illinois Reading Council Literacy Support Grant.

Recently the primary school teachers traveled to Springfield, IL to present this program at the Illinois Reading Conference. Over eighty teachers from across Illinois attended their session to learn how they can motivate students in their schools.

Women Changing the Face of Agriculture Conference

The fifth annual Women Changing the Face of Agriculture conference on March 8 at Southern Illinois University Carbondale provided young women professional development and networking opportunities.

The conference featured more than 100 women with careers in many facets of the agriculture industry. These professionals shared their stories and tips with more than 450 young women, including some from Eastland High School, interested in pursuing an education or career in agriculture.

In a ‘speed networking’ format, young women received insight into helpful agriculture courses, internship and career options, salary ranges and much more followed by informational breakout sessions on several important topics.

Among the many attendees were Eastland students.

Sarah Muirhead served as the keynote speaker of the conference. She was raised actively in farming and 4-H and serves as a manager to an international publication called Feedstuffs that provides news, information and analysis involved in our modern food production systems. She also co-created Foodstuffs FoodLink, a multi-media effort dedicated to providing you and your family with the facts related to food and how it’s produced. Muirhead advice on women making marks in agriculture.

“I had a desire to make my own mark in agriculture. For those of you seeking a career where you can truly make a difference, this is where it’s at. Agriculture needs you and no one and no stereotype is ever going to get in our way!”

Progressive Agriculture Safety Day™ Planned

A Progressive Agriculture Safety Day for children ages 6 to 13 is being planned for Saturday, May 4 at the Carroll County Fairgrounds in Milledgeville from 8:15 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. The event is being conducted by the Carroll County Farm Bureau Quality of Life Action Team in conjunction with the Progressive Agriculture Foundation. Children often see farm and livestock operations as exciting playgrounds – providing endless hours of fun and adventure. However, these facilities and the livestock and equipment on them also can set the stage for tragedy. The Action Team is looking to educate the youth along with parents on the hazards that exist on the farm.

Hands-on demonstrations teach participants lifesaving first aid techniques and reveal the hidden hazards of farm surroundings. Demonstrations focus on farm hazards associated with electricity, fire, grain safety, first aid, bicycle safety, and more. We will also be offering a free CPR class for parents to attend while their children partake in the safety day. Each family attending the Safety Day will receive a free first-aid kit compliments of the Carroll County Farm Bureau through a grant from the Illinois Farm Bureau and COUNTRY Financial.

Parents can obtain more information about registering their children to participate in the safety day by calling the Carroll County Farm Bureau at or printing a registration form off our website at www.carrollcfb.org. Registrations must be received by April 22.

Extension to Offer Emerald Ash Borer Education for Public

University of Illinois Extension will host an informative emerald ash borer homeowner management workshop on Monday, May 20th from 6 to 7 pm at Highland Community College West Campus in Elizabeth. University of Illinois Extension educators will explain the history, life cycle, and control options for emerald ash borer, as well as the management choices available for selectively saving your ash tree. There will be time for participants to ask questions.

The emerald ash borer is a small, metallic-green beetle native to Asia. Its larvae burrow into the bark of ash trees, causing the trees to starve and eventually die. Ash trees can be infested with EAB for a few years before the tree begins to demonstrate any signs of EAB infestation.

Currently, 41 Illinois counties are under quarantine to prevent the “man-made” spread of the beetle. The quarantine prohibits the intrastate movement of potentially-contaminated wood products, including ash trees, limbs and branches, and all types of firewood. Currently Ogle, DeKalb, Boone and Winnebago counties are within the quarantine zone with the threat of adjacent counties being confirmed at any point.

The fee for the EAB program is $5. For more information or to register, call the U of I Extension office at or visit us online at http://web.extension.illinois.edu/jsw/

If you need a reasonable accommodation to participate in this program, please contact the Extension Office hosting the event.

West Carroll Wins 3rd in Operation Teen Safe Driving Program

The Illinois Department of Transportation, the Ford Motor Company Fund, The Allstate Foundation, Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White and the Illinois State Police (ISP) today announced the seven winning schools from the 2012-13 Operation Teen Safe Driving (OTSD) program. 3rd place in region 3 went to West Carroll HS. OTSD began in 2007 and, since then, annual teen fatality numbers in automobile crashes have dropped by more than half in Illinois. The program includes the support of Governor Pat Quinn, the Illinois State Board of Education and the national Governor’s Highway Safety Association.

“In 2007, the first year of OTSD, a total of 155 teens died in automobile crashes on Illinois roadways,” said Illinois Transportation Secretary Ann L. Schneider. “In 2012, the provisional count shows that 71 teens died in Illinois crashes. We want to see that number at zero, but the 2012 experience is less than half the number we saw in 2007, and we think that is a huge step in the right direction. We will not be satisfied until we reach zero fatalities, and we believe this nationally recognized, peer-led program is an excellent tool to help us try to continue this positive trend.”

Connie Swanson/DeSpain will also sing a special hymn.

The church’s organ originally was designed for the church by Henry Beard of the Moller Organ Company, Hagerstown, Md., and installed in 1951. During the summer of 1995, it was rebuilt by the Levsen Organ Company in Princeton, Iowa. Levsen replaced the deteriorated leather bellows with an electric valve action. Four new ranks of pipes were added, and chambers housing the pipes were remodeled to provide more room.

The concert will begin at 3:00 p.m. and will be followed with a time of fellowship. The building is accessible to all. The church is located at 100 E. Lincolnway in Morrison.
