MOUNT CARROLL—Over 50 students turned the Carroll County Courthouse into a classroom on Tuesday, May 1.
Eighth grade students from West Carroll, Eastland and Milledgeville took part in annual Law Day, which concluded with a mock trial.
The day began in the large courtroom for an introduction as students got a first-hand look at a court hearing and a preview of their day.
Prior to their arrival, the students were either selected or elected for the various county offices they would be job shadowing during the day.
According to Carroll County State’s Attorney Scott Brinkmeier, who helped set up the annual event, the students were given name tags and also received certificates for their participation in the program.
Carroll County Coroner Matt Jones explains the duties and responsibilities to a group of eighth grade students during Law Day for on May 1 at the Carroll County Courthouse.
After being sworn into their respective offices by Judge Val Gunnarsson, the students began their day.
The rest of the morning was spent in 45-minute blocks as they toured the county jail, visited the various county offices, and were given details about their respective county offices.
The Mount Carroll American Legion then treated the students to lunch at the Mount Carroll Cafe.
Following lunch, the students returned to the courtroom for a scripted mock trail where they role-played all aspects of a trial, including the 12-member jury.
“It was a really great experience for the students,” Brinkmeier said of Law Day.
