Livermore was commissioned to become the manager of the new “Central Telephone Company.” It certainly was the happenin’ ‘80’s what with multimedia in downtown Lanark, newspaper and telephone.

A project initiated by the Illinois Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) culminated in June during the dedication ceremony for the new women veterans monument.

Each year The American Legion Department of Illinois Commander chooses a Special Project while they are in Office. 2010-2011 Department Commander Richard C. Groharing of Thomson, IL named his Special Project when the Illinois State Organization NSDAR approached The American Legion Department of Illinois and Commander Groharing looking for his support to sponsor the granite base that holds the Women Veterans monument.

Commander Groharing’s goal was to raise a minimum of $6,000 for the monuments granite base. With the help of the Illinois State Organization NSDAR led by State Regent Luanne Frosch Bruckner, Thomson, IL, they raised over $10,000 for the monument that was erected and dedicated on Saturday, June 18, 2011 in Mt. Vernon, IL at the C.E. Brehm Memorial Library.

In the photo (L to R) at the dedication are Dan Grant, Director of Illinois Veterans Affairs; Major Tammy Duckworth, IL Army National Guard and assistant secretary for the US Department of Veterans Affairs. Duckworth lost both her legs from injuries suffered when her helicopter was shot down over Iraq in 2004. She is depicted in the DAR statue with Revolutionary War legend Molly Pitcher; and addressing the crowd before the ribbon cutting is Luanne Frosch Bruckner, State Regent from the Carroll Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution, who recently served the last year of her 2-year term as Regent. Bruckner is now Honorary State Regent. Bruckner concluded the dedication by saying, “May all who pause in this place be reminded of the sacrifices made for freedom we enjoy.”
