Volunteer Millers to Host Lincoln Musical Event
The Volunteer Millers at De Immigrant windmill in Fulton, Illinois, will host their next public program on Thursday, August 29, at 6:00 PM. “Abraham Lincoln in Song” will be performed at the Windmill Cultural Center at 111 – 10th Avenue in downtown Fulton, across from the city’s authentic Dutch windmill.
Chris Vallillo is an acclaimed musician who makes the “unmetropolitan” America come to life. Having spent the last 30 years in the rural Midwest, he has an affinity for American roots music. Performing on six-string and bottleneck slide guitars and harmonica, Vallillo weaves original, contemporary, and traditional songs into a compelling portrait of the history of the Midwest.
“Abraham Lincoln in Song” documents a period of change and struggle in our nation. From his days as a flat-boater, through his time at New Salem, his years as a circuit lawyer, and up through his presidency, Lincoln’s life is a microcosm of the development of Illinois. “Abraham Lincoln in Song” sheds light on one of history’s most beloved figures. Special emphasis is placed on showing Lincoln’s bond with the common man and his desire for reconciliation. It is an extensively researched, historically accurate program designed to educate as well as entertain. It has been performed at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum, The Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum, The Lincoln Home National Historic Site, and Gettysburg National Battlefield Museum. “Abraham Lincoln in Song” received the endorsement of the Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission. The accompanying CD reached #10 on Billboard’s Bluegrass Album Chart.
Vallillo was a recipient of the Illlinois Arts Council Artist Fellowship Award for music composition and was a nominee for the Governor’s Award for Individual Artist. He conducted the Schuyler Arts Folk Music Project to document the last of the pre-radio generation. These recordings were accepted into the American Folklife Collection at the Library of Congress. From 1990 - 1998, he served as the host and co-producer of the award-winning radio performance series “Rural Route 3.” He recently completed his second term as the Illinois State Scholar for the Smithsonian Institution’s traveling exhibit on roots music “New Harmonies.”
Refreshments will be served following the event. The facility is accessible to persons with disabilities. The program is free and open to the public. The 2013 programs are supported by a grant from the D.S. Flikkema Foundation. For more information, visit the city’s website at www.cityoffulton.us or contact Heather Bennett at (815) 589-4545.

Illinois EPA to Convene First Meeting of State Environmental Justice Commission
The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA) today announced that the first meeting of the Illinois Commission on Environmental Justice will be held August 14th at 10 a.m. in Chicago and Springfield.
The commission will operate under the principle that environmental justice requires that no segment of the population, regardless of race, national origin, age, or income, should bear disproportionately high or adverse effects of environmental pollution. The commission is charged with advising state entities on environmental justice; analyzing the impact of state and local laws and policies on environmental justice and sustainable communities; developing criteria to assess whether communities in the state may be experiencing environmental issues and recommending options to the Governor’s office and legislators for addressing these issues.
The 20-member volunteer and non-compensated commission will include six state agency directors, a representative of each legislative caucus and 10 members appointed by the Governor to represent affected communities, businesses, environmental organizations, units of local government, experts on environmental health and justice and interested members of the public.
“As a community member in one of the many frontline communities of Chicago, we are excited to be a part of the Illinois Environmental Justice Commission,” said Kimberly Wasserman Nieto, Commission Chair and Executive Director of the Little Village Environmental Justice Organization. “To be at the table with different stakeholders working on rural and urban issues that affect us all give us hope to the future of the environment in Illinois.”

Four Seasons Gardening Program Starts
The fall series of University of Illinois Extension’s Four Seasons Gardening program, which focuses on environmental stewardship and backyard food production, gets underway this month. The first session of the series is titled, Some Like it HOT: Plants for Hot, Dry Areas. The program is offered on August 20 at 1:00 p.m. The session will be presented via teleconference at the Extension office in Elizabeth, IL.
Landscapes often include challenging sites where the heat is high and the water is dry. Areas next to driveways or near south facing buildings can frustrate even the most seasoned gardener. Before you consider giving up on plants and ordering asphalt, discover the diversity of plants that thrive in hot dry sites.
Other topics in the fall series include Winter Wise Your Landscape: Knowledge to Prevent Costly Mistakes, set for September 3rd, Pollinator Plants set for September 17th, and What’s Trending Now in Landscape Design on October 1st. All sessions will be held at the office in Elizabeth and will begin at 1:00pm.
Cost per session is $5. Advance registration is needed. Phone the local U of I Extension office for more details, or register online, http://web.extension.illinois.edu/jsw/ .

August is School Preparedness Month in Illinois
Students soon will be heading back to school and parents across Illinois are busy getting their children ready for the new school year. As part of School Preparedness Month during August, the Illinois Emergency Management Agency (IEMA) encourages parents to include emergency preparedness in those back-to-school plans.
“For many parents, back-to-school planning usually means picking up notebooks, pencils, crayons and other school supplies,” said IEMA Director Jonathon Monken. “But the new school year is also a good time to make sure you know your school’s plans for keeping kids safe during an emergency and for providing your current emergency contact information to school officials.”
Monken said no one likes to think about an emergency happening while children are in school or at daycare. However, the tornado that struck two schools in Moore, Okla., in May serves as a reminder that emergency situations can arise during the school day.
Back-to-school planning tips include:
Know your child’s school or day care emergency plan.
Find out where children will be taken in the event of an evacuation during school hours.
Ensure your emergency contact information is up-to-date at your child’s school.
Pre-authorize a friend or relative to pick up your children in an emergency and make sure the school knows who that designated person is.
Have a family communications plan and review the plan periodically with your child. The plan should include contact information for an out-of-area family member or friend, since local telephone networks may not work during a major disaster.
Many college campuses offer email and text messages to alert students of potential dangers, such as severe weather and other threats. Encourage your college student to sign-up for such alerts. Some colleges also provide alert messages for parents so they also are aware of potential dangers at their child’s school.
Additional preparedness information is available on the Ready Illinois website at www.Ready.Illinois.gov.
