Mary L. Kessler, age 85, of Mt. Carroll, Illinois, died Friday, January 16, 2009, at the Big Meadows Nursing Home in Savanna, Illinois. Cremation rites have been accorded. Mary was born November 30, 1923, in Salem Twp., Mt. Carroll, Illinois, the daughter of Kenneth and Gladys (Campbell) Schneider. She attended country school at Oakville, and graduated from Mt. Carroll High School in 1942. Mary was united in marriage to Herbert W. Kessler at her parents home on March 23, 1943. Herbert preceded her in death on August 17, 1995.
Mary had worked for Ashby’s Grocery Store, Holman’s Food, and as a cook for the Carroll County Sheriff’s Department. She was also a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great – grandmother who enjoyed taking care of her family and spending time with good friends. Mary was known as an excellent cook, and her pies were “world famous.” She enjoyed piecing together puzzles and gardening.
Mary is survived and lovingly remembered by one daughter, Karen (Larry) Zink of Mt. Carroll, Illinois; two sons, Ronald C. (Sara) Kessler of Tucson, Arizona, and Rick L. (Linda) Kessler of Mt. Carroll; nine grandchildren, Scott, Jill, Jeff, Troy, Drew, Brooke, Laura, Megan, and Rikki; fourteen great – grandchildren; two sisters, Norma (Lawrence) Woessner of Shannon, Illinois, and Doris (Wilmer) Smith of Davis, Illinois; three brothers, John (Shirley) Schneider of Lanark, Illinois, Bill (Lelia) Schneider of Mt. Carroll, and Kenny (Donna) Schneider of Mt. Carroll; and one sister – in – law, Mary Schneider of Mt. Carroll.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Herbert Kessler, one sister, Betty Kessler, and one brother, David Schneider.

Sam was born March 1, 1933, in Grassy Butte, North Dakota, the son of Mike and Mary (Zevik) Logosz. He married Sandy Rose in Mt. Carroll, Illinois. Sam served in the United States Marine Corp during the Korean War. He worked as a truck driver most of his life, most recently at J.T. Cullen in Fulton, Illinois. Sam enjoyed traveling, fishing, and working with his hands, particularly wood working.
Sam is survived by his wife Sandy of Mt. Carroll, Illinois; and two sisters, Ann Walker of Mt. Carroll, and Dorothy Westby of Seattle, Washington.
Sam was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, John Logosz; and four sisters, Olga Logosz, Pauline Lund, Rosella Dalton, and Helen Pederson.

John was born on June 28, 1947, the son of Kenneth Leroy and Alma Jean (Cowden) Atkins, in Savanna, Illinois. He attended Thomson School. John married Pat Foster on May 29, 1980 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. He enjoyed bowling, gambling at the riverboat casinos, fishing, restoring cars, and his motorcycles. Most of all John loved his family.
John is survived by his wife, Pat Atkins of Thomson; three sons, Richard (Kimberley Wurster) Atkins of Thomson, Wayne Atkins of Thomson, John Atkins of Thomson; three daughters, Denise (John) Abildgaard, Joni (Jacob) Qualls of Clinton, Iowa, Marie (Jeremy Story) Atkins of Thomson; thirteen grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; mother, Alma Jean of Strong City, Kansas; brother David Shelton of Strong City, Kansas; two sisters, April Pike of Oklahoma, Gloria (James) Skaggs of Arizona.

Harriet was born August 19, 1926, in Geneseo, Illinois, the daughter of George and Anna (Covell) Russell. She married Robert L. Smith December 6, 1946, in Moline, Illinois. In addition to helping on the family farm she worked at General Electric in Morrison, Illinois, Elkay in Lanark, Illinois, and Atwoods in Mt. Carroll until retiring in 1988.
Harriet enjoyed camping, traveling, fishing, and crocheting. But most of all she loved the time she spent with her family.

Thomas A. Veith
Thomas A. Veith, age 95, of Mt. Carroll, Illinois, died Saturday, January 10, 2009, at the Good Samaritan Society in Mt. Carroll. Tom was born April 27, 1913, in Mt. Sterling, Illinois, the son of William B. and Effie P. (Clark) Veith. He graduated from Mt. Sterling High School in 1931. Tom was married Marjorie A. Tink, who preceded him in death in December of 1963. He later married Mary “Lolly” Wachtel DuBree on August 21, 1965.
During the 1930’s, Tom worked at the Civilian Conservation Corps and the Savanna Army Depot, before enlisting in the United States Army at age 29. Tom served his country in Europe under General George S. Patton during World War II. Upon returning home, he resumed work at the Savanna Army Depot, and later purchased the grocery store in Mt. Carroll. In 1959, he opened Veith Memorials in Mt. Carroll, and in 1968 he went to work for the Mt. Carroll Mutual Fire Insurance Company before retiring in 1970.
Tom enjoyed golfing, hunting, fishing, and any sort of outdoor work, especially taking care of his lawn.
Tom and Lolly spent their winters in Florida. Tom also liked to go camping in their motor home. Tom is survived by his wife Mary “Lolly” Veith of Mt. Carroll, Illinois; one son, Richard (Nancy) Veith of Mt. Carroll; one daughter, Mary Elizabeth (Clark) Baker of Zion, Illinois; two step – sons, Thomas (Carol) DuBree of Connecticut, and Douglas J. (Cindy) DuBree of Rock Island, Illinois; two step – daughters, Pru Haney of Davenport, Iowa, and Pamela Miller of Mt. Carroll; ten grandchildren, and numerous great – grandchildren.
Tom was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife Marjorie; one sister, Mary Margaret Adams; and one brother, Glen Veith.
Vincent “Vince” L. Penry
Vincent “Vince” L. Penry, age 80, of Hanover, Illinois, died Wednesday, January 7, 2009 at Mercy Medical Center, Dubuque, Iowa. Cremation Rites have been accorded. A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, January 13, 2009 at Hanover United Methodist Church, Hanover, Illinois with Pastor Lynn Matthews officiating. Interment will be held at a later date in the Bayview Cemetery, Bellingham, Washington. Visitation will be held at the church from 10:00-11:00 a.m. Tuesday, January 13, 2009 prior to the service. Vince was born in Bellingham, Washington on December 2, 1928, the son of Walter and Veronica (McQuilken) Penry. Vince graduated from Bellingham High School in 1947. Upon graduation, Vince enlisted in the United States Coast Guard and served for three years during the Korean War. On June 27, 1986 he married Lucille I. Johnson in Bellingham.
Vince first worked as a meat cutter for Safeway Grocery Stores and Associated Groceries in the Bellingham area. He was later employed by the City of Bellingham as a park technician for twenty years before retiring in 1990. After retiring, Vince and Lucille traveled across the country in their motor home for a year. In 1999, Vince and Lucille decided to make their new home in Hanover. While living in Hanover, Vince worked at Chestnut Mountain Resort as a ski lift operator for ten years and was the sexton of Evergreen Cemetery, Hanover for the past three years. He also served as a volunteer for the Hanover Park District. Vince enjoyed attending his granddaughter Julie’s school events and loved spending time socializing with friends.
Vince is survived and will be dearly missed by his wife, Lucille; two sons, Jon Coe of Carbon Cliff, Illinois and Ted (Denise) Coe of Bloomington, Illinois; two daughters, Kathy (Doug) Coe-Vetter of Bellingham and Kim Coe of Maquoketa, Iowa; one special granddaughter, Julie Coe whom he raised; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and three nieces and one nephew.
Vince is preceded in death by his parents; one brother, James; and two sisters, Patricia Mobly and Catherine Stephens.

Emmert was born March 3, 1916, in Shannon, Illinois, the son of George and Jenny (Daniels) Zumdahl. He married Velda Harter on March 29, 1941. Emmert owned and operated the Zumdahl Tiling Service for over thirty years. He was a Naval Veteran serving in the South Pacific on a patrol craft during World War II.
Emmert was a member of the Hope United Methodist Church in Chadwick, Illinois, he served on the Chadwick School Board and was Chairman of the Board of Farmers State Bank of Chadwick for many years. He was intensely loyal to his family, his church, and the Chicago Cubs.
Emmert is survived by his wife Velda; three sons, Steven (Susan) Zumdahl of Seymour, Illinois, David (Susan) Zumdahl of Byron, Illinois, and Mark (Margaret) Zumdahl of Sterling, Illinois; ten grandchildren and thirteen great - grandchildren.

Elsie Evelyn Larsen, age 93, passed away Monday, January 5, 2009 at her home in Savanna.

Elsie was born May 23, 1915 near Lanark, Illinois. Elsie was the third child born to Charles and Hattie Welker. She attended country school and graduated from Lanark High School in 1932. Elsie became the bride of Axel Larsen on July 12, 1934, after meeting at a PTA meeting in Brookville, Illinois.
Axel and Elsie eventually settled on their farm, south of Savanna on Scenic Bluff Road, to farm and raise their family. Together they had six daughters and one son. Elsie was always the homemaker and enjoyed every minute of doing it, providing for her children, and later on, the grandkids. Cooking and canning were an important part of living and providing for her family throughout the year. Lots of vegetables and fruits lined her shelves, as well as the favorite topping for her pancakes- Jelly. Every child and grandchild will remember all of the breakfast meals that included her thin pancakes that were rolled up and smothered with homemade jelly.
Although she was considered the disciplinarian of her family, she didn’t have to tender the responsibility too often. She was a crafts person at letting her kids develop their own sense of worth and where they fit in around the farm and around their daily lives at work and school. Everyone took on their fair share of the responsibilities according to their interests and everything got done.
She also loved to attend “Club” meetings once a month. Meetings always had a special agenda with occasional guests sharing travel or history lessons. Elsie had a strong faith and was a longtime member of the Hickory Grove Methodist Church.
Elsie was preceded in death by her parents as well as two brothers and one sister, her husband, Axel, and her daughters, Karen (Tillquist) Sandoval and Doris Schupbach, and daughter in-law, Debra Hope (Price) Larsen.
She is survived by her children, Barbara (Stanley) Trousdale, Wilma (Robert) Acuff, Donna (John) Grimm, Donald Larsen and Paula (Robin) Brown, three sons in-law, Duane Schupbach, Warren Tillquist and Ed Sandoval, as well as nineteen grandchildren, forty-six grandchildren and twenty-one great-great grandchildren
Gail S. Hutton
Gail S. Hutton, age 49, of Savanna, Illinois, died after a long illness, surrounded by her family on January 7, 2009 at FHN Memorial Hospital, Freeport, Illinois. Gail was born October 7, 1959 in Manitowic, Wisconsin, the daughter of Gregory and Sharon (Schelthelm) Gappa. She graduated from Elk Grove Village High School, Elk Grove, Illinois. Gail married Tom Hutton on August 8, 1986 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Tom and Gail moved to Savanna, Illinois in 1989 where they were active conservationists and outdoorsmen. Gail enjoyed horseback riding, fishing, and hunting. She was an avid gardener and was very proud of her flower and vegetable garden, and her ornamental ponds. An expert quilter, Gail was pleased to donate her work to Carroll County Pheasants Forever. Gail was also an excellent cook. She loved animals, especially her dogs and horses.
While living in Savanna, Gail work for various businesses; including the Savanna office of Mt. Carroll Insurance Agency, Casey’s Convenience Store, Savanna, where she was the manager, Shopko in Freeport and US Bank, Clinton, Iowa.
Gail is survived by her husband, Tom Hutton of Savanna; her mother, Sharon Gappa of Manitowoc, Wisconsin; a brother, Greg Gappa, Jr. of Kentucky; her mother in-law, Theresa Hutton of Madison, Wisconsin; her step-daughter, Jodi (Michael) Champion of Neguanee, Michigan and their children, Gracie and Korie; her step-son, Christopher Hutton of Hancock, Michigan and his daughter, Isabell; three sisters in-law, Nadine Hutton of Santa Cruz, California, Valerie (Steven) Schwall of Indian Creek, Illinois and Pamela (Harold) Harsch of New Berlin, Wisconsin; her brother-in-law, Noel (Susan) Hutton of Middleton, Wisconsin; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
