The morning of Friday January 27, 2012 started out as a regular day for 3rd grade student Tyler Flaig and his family.

“Tyler got up and seemed fine,” his mother, Jaclyn Haas reported. By 11:30 a.m., everything was very different.

“I got a call from Karen Wilhelms, the school nurse saying that Tyler’s neck was very swollen, and he needed to go to the hospital,” Haas reported.

After his admittance at FHN Hospital in Freeport, Tyler had an abscess on his tonsil drained, and also had a breathing tube inserted due to a large amount of swelling around his windpipe. Doctors at FHN felt that Tyler needed more intense treatment than could be offered by them, so he was airlifted to Madison, Wisconsin.

“When he got to Madison, we were told that if we would have waited, Tyler wouldn’t be here,” Jaclyn said.

Tyler was put into a medically induced coma for three days. After undergoing surgery to remove one tonsil, the swelling finally began to improve, and Tyler was able to have the breathing tube removed.

“It was one of the worst things a parent has to go through. We want to thank the school for everything and knowing there was a problem,” Haas said while hugging Tyler.

Doctors told the family that Tyler had developed a severe case of Tonsillitis, and also Viral Strep. During this ordeal, doctors also discovered a heart murmur, and will be following up on that.

A full recovery is expected, and Tyler went back to school on Thursday, February 9th.
