Three local wrestlers qualified for this year’s IHSA State Wrestling Tournament (Feb. 16-18) including Mark and Matt McDonnell of Morrison, who captured sectional titles at Byron on Saturday in their respective weight classes.
Mark McDonnell (145 pounds) became Morrison’s first four-time sectional champion with a 10-6 win over Talon Paul of Stillman Valley in the finals to improve to 22-1.
His brother, Matt McDonnell, improved to 39-2 pinning Shawn Skimmer of Rock Falls in 1:28 in the title bout at 195 pounds.
Jeff Casey, a sophomore from West Carroll, placed fourth at 120 pounds and heads to Assembly Hall with a 33-8 record.
The top four finishers in each weight class at Sectionals now qualify for the state tournament, with wrestling beginning on Thursday, Feb. 16. Finals are set for Saturday, Feb. 18.
Also competing at the Byron Sectional but not advancing were Payton Nevills (126), Zach Hartman (138), Matt Ross (160), all of West Carroll, and Tyler Dolan (120), Calvin Harridge (170) and Logan Kuehl (182) all of Morrison.
Lena-Winslow’s Gunner Wenger (103) and Quincy Kalkbrenner (138) won sectional titles.

The Lady Cougars and Pearl City couldn’t manage to generate much offense in the first half of their opening game in the Eastland Regional held in Lanark on Monday night. Both teams struggled in the first quarter as Eastland’s scoring came on a Kyndra Nielsen three pointer and the Lady Wolves had a bucket by Ashley Cropper and a charity toss from Michaela Heinrich. Both squads fared a little better in the second period as Eastland put seven points on the board and Pearl City added eight points to make the score eleven to ten Lady Cougars at the half.
Both teams came out in the second half ready to score as the Lady Cougars put up fourteen points and Pearl City scored thirteen to make it Eastland twenty five and Pearl City twenty three going into the final quarter. The Lady Cougars put up fifteen points to the Lady Wolves fourteen and converted eight of twelve free throws to pull out the narrow win.
Lady Cougar Kayla Barnes led Eastland with thirteen points, eleven coming in the second half. Jenna Canon’s sixteen points led Pearl City with fifteen coming after the intermission.

The Lady Bulldogs took a fourteen to four first quarter lead and rolled to the easy twenty eight point victory. Aquin increased their lead to thirteen points (29-16) at the half and led by nineteen points (41-22) after three quarters. A fifteen to six fourth quarter scoring advantage made the final margin of victory for the Lady Bulldogs. Aquin’s Sophie Brunner was unstoppable in the contest, as she led the Lady Bulldogs (26-4) and all scorers in the game with thirty points. The Lady Cougars (15-15) Lexis Macomber topped Eastland in scoring with eight points.
Dakota 46 Forreston 43 (OT)
Dakota and the Lady cardinals battled it out in the second game of the night at the Eastland Regional. When the smoke cleared the Lady Indians escaped with the narrow three point overtime win. Forreston led by a single point at six to five after the first quarter and Dakota led by two points (18-16) at the intermission. Dakota held the same two point lead at twenty six to twenty four going into the final quarter. The Lady Cardinals battled back to knot the score at thirty eight points apiece at the end of regulation. Free throws down the stretch proved to be the winning margin as Dakota went to the line fourteen times, converting on eight of the charity tosses. Aleesha Cleaver led Dakota (24-6) with twenty three points. Ketarah DeVries led Forreston with twenty points.

The Lady Panthers opened up a fourteen to two first quarter lead and rolled to the nineteen point victory in the opening game of the Stockton Regional. The Le-Win defense held the Lady Warriors to single digit scoring in each of the first three quarters to take control of this game.
Four players scored in double figures for the Lady Panthers, led by Ashley Block’s fourteen with teammates Courtney Haight adding twelve points, Heidi Gahm eleven and Paxton Kempel added ten points. The Lady Warriors were led in scoring by Danica Balbach who dropped in fifteen points to lead all scorers.
Stockton 61 Galena 31
The Lady Blackhawks held a slim two point lead (12-10) going into the second quarter but Stockton outscored Galena twenty to eight in the quarter to take control. The lead was forty five to twenty four after three quarters and the Lady Blackhawks finished the contest outscoring the Lady Pirates sixteen to seven in quarter four. Sarah Nadig’s fourteen points led Stockton with Jaci Lawfer and Sam Magee each adding eleven points apiece. Mekenna Miles who scored eleven points with teammate Allison Kelly adding nine points led Galena.

River Ridge/Scales Mound 42 Le-Win 24
The Lady Wildcats took a fourteen to four first quarter lead and held off the Lady Panthers with a late run to take the eighteen point win. The lead was nine points (20-11) at the half and the Lady Panthers closed the gap to just five points (27-22) going into the final quarter. Le-Win was able to narrow the Lady Wildcat lead to a single possession at three points but River Ridge/Scales Mound closed the game with a fifteen to nothing run to take control of the final outcome. Kaitlyn Pleau led the Lady Wildcats with fifteen points and teammate Ashley Brant added fourteen. Paxton Kempel led Le-Win with eight points.

East Dubuque 55 Stockton 41
A close game was taken over by the Lady Warriors in the second quarter as they cruised to the fourteen point victory over the Lady Blackhawks. East Dubuque led by a single point at six to five going into quarter number two. The Lady Warriors then outscored Stockton twelve to three in the period to take control. East Dubuque led thirty four to twenty three going into the final quarter and outscored Stockton twenty one to eighteen in quarter number four. Michaela Marty led the Lady Warriors in scoring with twenty points and teammate Nicole Hayes added thirteen. Stockton was led in scoring by Samantha Magee who dumped in eighteen points with Jaci Lawfer adding thirteen points.

Before a packed house at Stockton High School, the Lady Wildcats and Lady Warriors played a classic with East Dubuque rallying in the final quarter to take the six point regional championship game victory.
The score was knotted at eight after the first quarter with both squads playing tenacious defense that would not let the other teams offense get on track. RR/SM took control in the second quarter, outscoring the Lady Warriors ten to two to take the eight point (18-10) half time lead.
East Dubuque came back to take the third quarter twelve to none and cut the Lady Wildcats lead to five points (27-22) going into the final quarter. The fourth was all East Dubuque as they converted ten of twelve charity shots in the quarter and held off RR/SM for the narrow victory.
Emily Herbst led East Dubuque with eleven points while River Ridge/Scales Mound’s Kaitlyn Pleau led the Lady Wildcats with nine points and pulled down twelve rebounds. East Dubuque now faces the Prophetstown Lady Prophets in the opening round of the Eastland Sectional with the winner heading to DeKalb for Super Sectional play.

The Lady Missiles kept the game close for three quarters before the Lady Steamers took control for the thirteen point win. Fulton led by a single point (12-11) going into the second quarter and Milledgeville trailed by four points (22-18) at the half. Neither team generated much offense in the third quarter with Fulton adding four points to the Lady Missiles three to make it Fulton twenty six and Milledgeville twenty one going into the final quarter. Fulton exploded for sixteen points in the fourth to the Lady Missiles eight to make the final margin of victory.
Samantha Raab led Fulton in scoring with eleven points and teammate Morgan Sandquist added ten points. The Lady Missiles were led by Brandie Gelwicks who scored ten points.
Polo 53 AFC 43
The Lady Marcos jumped out to a fifteen to ten first quarter lead and held off the Lady Raiders to take the ten point victory. AFC led by a single point (27-26) at the half but Polo took the lead back in the third quarter, outscoring AFC twenty one to seven to take control of the game. Ashley Haye topped the Lady Marcos on the scoreboard, dumping in nineteen points. AFC was led by Kristen Dillon who also scored nineteen points for the Lady Raiders.

The Lady Comets ended the Fillies season on Monday at the Riverdale Regional with the ten point win. Sterling Newman took an eleven to seven first quarter lead and extended that lead to eight points (24-16) at the intermission. The Lady Comets outscored Morrison thirteen to ten in the third quarter to take a thirty seven to twenty six lead and held off the Fillies to take the win. Jaimie Hurd led Sterling Newman with eleven points and teammate Anna Grove added ten. Morrison was led by Morgan Ammon who scored fourteen points.
Riverdale 78 West Carroll 33
The Lady Rams took control of this game early and cruised to the lopsided forty five point win. Riverdale led twenty four to nine after the first quarter and held a thirty nine to twelve lead at the half. The lead grew to thirty six points (58-22) going into the final period and the Lady Rams outscored the Lady Thunder twenty to eleven in the fourth. Hannah Nimrick led Riverdale, and all scorers in the game with twenty three points and teammate Elle May added nineteen points. West Carroll was led by Ieshia Larson who dropped in a dozen points.
Lady Thunder head coach Ron Sietz said, “A tough game in the regional, playing Riverdale on their home court. The Lady Rams shot very well and out perimeter defense couldn’t stop them. Congratulations to the Lady Thunder for a great season.”

Their lead grew to seventeen points (56-39) going into the fourth quarter and they outscored the Marcos nineteen to ten in the final period. The Cougars had nine different players put points on the board, led by Ty Hartman’s sixteen points with teammate Tyler Giedd adding fifteen. Polo was led by Michael Geary who led all scorers with twenty six points, including seven three pointers.

The host Wolves took a thirteen to eight first quarter lead and extended that lead to thirty to eighteen at the intermission. Their lead grew to nineteen points (44-25) going into the final quarter and they outscored the Missiles seventeen to twelve in the fourth to make the final margin of the win. Jason Kurth topped all scorers in the contest with twenty one points and teammate Zach Moyer added fourteen. Milledgeville was led in scoring by Kaleb Ebersole’s thirteen points.
West Carroll 59 Forreston 33
The Cardinals traveled to Mt. Carroll and the host Thunder dominated the game to take the twenty six point victory. West Carroll held an eleven to eight first quarter lead and led twenty eight to twenty two at the half. The Thunder defense then shut the door on Forreston’s offense in the second half.
The Thunders Brady Edwards led all scorers in the contest with twenty points and fifteen rebounds and teammate Eric Naples added eleven points. Forreston was led in scoring by Tanner Bronkema who dumped in a dozen.
Thunder head coach Josh Knuth, said of the win, “We played solid team defense most of the night but we played it real well in the second half. We still turned the ball over too much. We have to get better at that. It was a good all around team effort but we have to stay focused and continue to improve over the next couple of weeks.”

AFC 63 Milledgeville 53
The Raiders traveled to Milledgeville on Thursday night and handed the Missiles a ten point loss. AFC held a narrow two point lead (18-16) going into the second quarter and led by a single point (28-27) at the intermission. A nineteen to four third quarter scoring advantage for the Raiders gave them control and they outscored Milledgeville twenty one to fifteen in the final quarter. Ermir Ramadani led AFC in scoring with twenty three points while teammate Nate Fahs added sixteen. Kaleb Ebersole led the Missiles with sixteen points and Kameron DawTyne added a dozen.
West Carroll 74 Stockton 61
The Thunder hosted the Blackhawks and came away with the thirteen point victory. West Carroll led seventeen to twelve at the end of the first quarter and held a thirty seven to twenty four half time lead. The lead remained at thirteen points at fifty five to forty two going into the fourth quarter and both teams put up nineteen points in the final period.
Brady Edwards topped the Thunder in scoring with thirty points and teammate Eric Naples added eleven. Cole Schamberger led Stockton with twenty two points and teammate Jared Hess added nineteen.
West Carroll head coach Josh Knuth commented, “It was a good way for the seniors to close their home season. We went with some different rotations to assure all the seniors got solid playing time and they all played well. We had a great crowd and it was a fun night. I’d like to thank the parents for all the wonderful food and treats after the game. We did not play well defensively tonight. That is something we must improve on over the next week.”
Freeport Aquin 55 Pearl City 50
The Bulldogs took a fourteen to seven first quarter lead and held off the Wolves in the second half to claim the narrow five point win. Aquin led twenty eight to twenty three at the half. The Wolves cut into that lead in the third quarter, narrowing the scoring gap to a single point (34-33) to start the final quarter. A twenty one to seventeen scoring advantage for Freeport Aquin made the final margin of victory for the Bulldogs. Lucas Diemer topped Aquin in scoring with twenty four points and Patrick Schmelzle added eleven. Zach Moyer led Pearl City with thirteen points and teammate Jason Kurth added a dozen.

Eastland 74 Sangamon Valley 52
The Cougars fared well at the Riverton Shootout on Saturday, downing Niantic Sangamon Valley by twenty two points. Eastland took a fifteen to fourteen first quarter lead and outscored Sangamon Valley twenty four to eleven in the second quarter to open up a thirty nine to twenty five half time lead. The lead grew to sixteen points at fifty five to thirty nine going into the final period and the Cougars outscored the Storm nineteen to thirteen in the fourth.
The Cougars had six different players score in double figures with Austin Hansen leading the Way with sixteen points. Ty Hartman added fifteen, Chase Wilhelms twelve, Skylar Paulson eleven and Dalton Shaner and Tyler Giedd added ten points apiece. The Storm were led by Eric Leonard who topped all scorers in the contest with twenty six points.

The Wolves and Steamers battled it out on Saturday in the second game of the day at the River Ridge Shootout in Hanover with Fulton taking the five point double overtime win. Pearl City jumped out to an early lead and Fulton kept battling back to close the gap. Charity tosses became an issue for the Wolves in the end as they were only able to convert on four of sixteen chances from the stripe. Fulton was twenty one of thirty five from the free throw line. Fulton’s Eric Renkes led the Steamers with nineteen points. Pearl City’s Jason Kurth led all scorers in the contest with thirty one points.

The Wildcats jumped out to a six point (19-13) first quarter lead and had to go to an extra period to escape with the narrow five point victory. River Ridge led thirty three to twenty six at the intermission. A nine to seven third quarter cut the Wildcats lead to five points (40-35) at the start of the fourth quarter and Blackhawk battled back with a fourteen to nine scoring advantage in the fourth to knot the score a forty nine apiece at the end of regulation. The Wildcats were able to break through, outscoring Blackhawk thirtten to eight in overtime to take the win.
Ryan Lerkle led River Ridge with twenty two points and teammate Matt Steele added ten points. Blackhawk was led by Merik Meythaler who scored fourteen points with teammates Seth Butler adding thirteen points and Coltin Piefer scoring a dozen.
Forreston 51 Polo 40
The Cardinals took control early in the game and took the eleven point victory. A thirteen to two first quarter put Forreston in control and they extended their lead to fourteen points (28-14) at the half. The lead grew to twenty four points (49-25) going into the final quarter and a fifteen to two fourth quarter pulled Polo back to within eleven. Only six players put points on the board for the Cardinals with Tanner Bronkema and Robert Cornelius both scoring twelve points with teammates Skyler Hayunga and Cody Whitehead each adding ten points. Polo was led by A.J. Dollmeyer’s ten points with Brady Bushman adding seven.
