West Carroll Falls To Morrison

The West Carroll girls battled the Morrison Fillies to the finish, falling to Morrison 49-39 on Monday evening at the Riverdale Regional. Despite being down seventeen to eight after the first quarter, the Thunder didn’t give up and keep battling.
They trailed by double digits at the half, down twenty-nine to eighteen. They fought back in the third quarter, outscoring Morrison fourteen to two to take a one point lead into the final frame. The Fillies (6-23) proved to be too much down the stretch outscoring West Carroll eighteen to seven in the last quarter to come away with the victory and end the Thunder’s season (2-20).
Shelby McBride led the Fillies scorers, netting eighteen points with teammate Erin Carney adding ten. West Carroll’s Kara Durward led the Thunder with seventeen points and Becca Fritz adding a dozen.
West Carroll head coach Travis Findlay commented, “I was so proud of our seniors tonight. Our juniors came out nervous and Becca and Kara carried us. Kara was exceptional tonight. Becca did everything from score to distribute the ball.”

Freeport Aquin Advances With Win Over Eastland

Freeport Aquin managed to hold off the Eastland Cougars down the stretch to win the championship game of the Pearl City Regional 43-36 on Friday evening. Neither team started the game particularly well as the first quarter score was a mere five to four in favor of the Cougars.
Eastland extended their lead to seven points 18-11 at the halftime buzzer. The third quarter was the turning point for the Bulldogs as Aquin’s Emily Mohr hit two big three pointers and Robin Hauser made a couple shots to put Aquin in the lead 24-23.
Eastland was held to a pair of Annabelle Borota three pointers and a basket by Brittny Olson while Aquin added fifteen points on the scoreboard to knot the score at twenty six at the beginning of the final quarter. The Bulldogs outscored Eastland seventeen to ten in the fourth to make the final margin of victory.
Borota led Eastland with eleven points and Emily Mohr led Freeport Aquin with thirteen.

Sterling Newman Falls To Mustangs

In a close game on Tuesday night, Morrison edged the Comets 59-52. The Mustangs held a slight two point lead after one quarter and extended that lead to three by the halftime intermission, They were able to up their lead to five points going into the final period and outscored Newman fifteen to thirteen in the last quarter to make the difference.
Newman also got themselves in some foul trouble as Morrison went to the line thirty seven times making twenty four from the charity stripe. Travis McBride led Morrison, dropping in twenty two points and Kyle Janssen added ten.

Milledgeville Falls To Mustangs

The Mustangs got off to a fast start and a good first half propelled them to the 62-45 victory over the Missiles at MHS on Thursday evening. Morrison outscored Milledgeville sixteen to six to open the game and widened their margin to fourteen points by halftime.
Milledgeville managed to keep the second half scoring close but couldn’t make up the ground from the first half lead that Morrison had built. Trevan Burn led the Mustangs (17-10) with twenty three points and teammate Travis McBride added fifteen. Keegan Neubauer paced the Missiles (7-17) scoring sixteen points.

Thunder Edge Hornets

In a game that was relatively close throughout, West Carroll was able to hold off Scales Mound and take the 53-44 victory in Mt. Carroll on Thursday night. Scales Mound held a one point lead after the first quarter 10-9. They were able to extend that lead to two points by the half and went into the locker room leading West Carroll 19-17. The third quarter belonged to the Thunder as they were able to open up a 35-31 lead going into the final period. The Thunder took a eighteen to thirteen advantage in the fourth to make the final margin of victory.
Nate Law led the Thunder scoring fifteen while teammate Tyler Brashaw added fourteen points. Thunder head coach Josh Knuth said, “We battled some poor shooting in the first half but came out in the second half and let our defense fuel our offense which allowed us to get into a rhythm. We executed our offense very well in the second half. We still are working on limiting our turnovers and out team defense both are very important for us to be the caliber of team we want to be come regional time.”
The Thunder will face Morrison in the opening round of regional play.

Wolves Handled By Cougars

The Eastland Cougars took control of Thursday night’s game right from the opening tip off at EHS and didn’t let up coasting to the 78-46 victory. Hot shooting and a tenacious defense stifled the Wolves who seemed to be handled in every facet of the game.
Eastland came out on fire scoring the games first twenty points. The second quarter began with an Eastland twenty four to seven first quarter lead. They extended their lead to twenty seven points by the intermission,
Pearl City managed to cut into that huge lead in the second half but the damage had already been done and the hill was just to large to overcome. The Cougars who used full court pressure right from the start of the contest which forced the Wolves either into turnovers or off balance forced shots which just wouldn’t fall.
Reid Lessman was the scoring leader for the Cougars pouring in fourteen points with teammates Tony and Brad Dunlap adding a dozen each. Pierson Hull of Pearl City led all scorers in the game with fifteen points.

Mustangs Handle Clippers With Ease

A big third quarter propelled the Morrison Mustangs to a Saturday evening win over Amboy 58-33. The Clippers started the game with a six point advantage after one quarter fourteen to eight. Morrison came storming back to take the second period fourteen to nine and take a three point lead into the locker room at the half. The third quarter was all Mustangs as they outscored Amboy twenty five to five to take the forty seven to twenty four lead into the fourth period.
Morrison outscored the Clippers eleven to nine in the fourth. Travis McBride led the Mustangs with twenty points.

West Carroll Outlasts Panthers

The Thunder were hitting on all cylinders n Saturday night in Mt. Carroll, handing Le-Win the loss 62-53. West Carroll started the game by taking a fourteen to seven first quarter lead. West Carroll held that lead at the half, going into the locker room with a twenty seven to twenty lead. They extended their lead to eleven at the end of three periods and coasted to the victory.
Eric Naples led the Thunder pouring in sixteen points while teammate Brady Edwards chipped in with thirteen, A.J. Emford led the Panthers with sixteen and Fritz Werhane added twelve.
Thunder head coach Josh Knuth said, “It was a hard fought victory tonight. I was happy with our effort and energy. We shared the ball very well offensively which allowed us to get many of our shots. We showed more toughness than we have so far this season which is a good sign because that is what you need come tourney time.”

West Carroll Tourney
The West Carroll Fresh/Soph Boy’s Basketball tournament will be held Wednesday, February 17th and Saturday, February 20th. Games will be held on Wednesday at 6:00 and 7:30 at both the Primary School in Savanna and the Middle School in Mt. Carroll. Games will run all day Saturday at the Middle School starting at 8:30 a.m. and ending with the championship game at 7:00 p.m.
Teams competing will be Eastland, Fulton, Milledgeville, Oregon, Pearl City, Scales Mound, Stockton and West Carroll. Admission on Wednesday will be $4.00 for adults and $3.00 for students. Saturday’s all day admission will be $5.00 for adults and $3.00 for students. Concessions will be available.
