Stockton Renegades Wrestling Club member Ty Harmston pushed himself hard over the past several weeks in preparation for the Illinois Kids Wrestling Federation Tournament. The hard work paid off for the 177-lb. eighth grader as he finished fifth at the state tournament held at the MetroCentre March 12th and 13th.
At the tournament, Harmston recorded 4 pins in his 5 matches capping off a 42-3 season. “It’s been a pleasure coaching Ty and watching his wrestling skills progress the past eight years,” says Coach Jim Brunner. “We are looking forward to watching him continue his wrestling career in high school.”
The Stockton Renegades are coached by Bill Hermann and Jim Brunner.
Dunlap Named To ICBA All-State Team
Tony Dunlap of the 4th place Eastland Cougars was named to the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association’s Class 1A/2A All-State first team. Tony averaged 20 points, 6.2 assists and 5.8 rebounds a game.
His top performance was in the DeKalb super-sectional against the Newark Norsemen where he poured in 36 points and set a Convocation Center record by hitting nine-three pointers. The previous record was seven.
After a shoulder injury in the opening game in Peoria sidelined him, it is unclear whether he will participate in baseball this spring. The Eastland baseball team finished fourth at state last season. Tony played center field for the Cougars and led the team in doubles with thirteen, runs with forty-four and stolen bases with thirty.
Four other NUIC players were named to the team, Dakota’s Kyle Benning to the fourth team and Polo’s Conner Lincoln, Forreston’s Kody Michael and East Dubuque’s Tyler McLane received special mention.

Prairie Advocate Sports
The Cougars and Fillies battled it out on the field at EHS on Thursday afternoon with Morrison edging Eastland 2-1. The Cougars got on the scoreboard first, pushing a run across in the bottom of the first.
The score remained at one to nothing until Morrison was able to push two runs across the plate in the top of the fifth, which turned out to be the tying and winning scores.
The Fillies Sam Sumption was the hitting standout for Morrison with a double and triple in the game. Christie Wiersema picked up the pitching victory going the distance and giving up only two hits while striking out eleven Eastland hitters.
The Cougars Marissa Harris took the loss, also going the distance, giving up six hits while striking out ten Fillie batters.

Byron Outslugs West Carroll
By Craig Lang
Prairie Advocate Sports
Despite jumping out to an early lead, the Thunder couldn’t silence the Byron bats as they fell in their first game of the season 14-4. West Carroll managed to take a three run lead into the second and tacked on another to make it three to nothing after two. Byron exploded for seven third inning runs and added three in the fifth and four more in the sixth.
The Thunders Chelsey Sipe led West Carroll at the plate going four for four with a double. Pitcher Kim Durward took the loss.
Thunder coach Don Mathey said, “We had a great start to the game but Byron simply played a better overall game in all aspects. The seven run third inning was really due to three errors we had in the inning. We will get better as the season goes on.”

Tigers Rout Thunder
By Craig Lang
Prairie Advocate Sports
Byron used twenty-three hits and solid pitching to take a pair from West Carroll. The host Tigers took game one 15-3 and the second game 17-3.
After a scoreless first inning in game one, the Tigers exploded for eleven runs over the next two innings to take control of the first game. Byron added another four in the fifth.
In the second game the Thunder put two on the scoreboard in the first but Byron came right back to tack on nine runs in the next two innings to seal their victory. West Carroll’s Tyler Brashaw went two for two with a solo home run in game two.
Thunder coach Bryan Kamper said of game one, “With this being our first game I expected us to look like a team that hadn’t played yet and we did. We walked ten batters and left seven men on base which is not a good formula for winning. I see a lot of positives despite the final result and look for us to get a lot better as the season goes along.”
