Jameson Rush Takes 2nd Place at State K of C Competition
ameson Rush, a 6th grade student at Eastland Middle School in Shannon, won second place in the Illinois State Council of Knights of Columbus State free throw competition for the 11-year old girls division.
The competition, which included winners from 16 other regions, was conducted at Chatham-Glenwood High School on April 11th. In order to get to State, Jameson competed in District and Regionals, making 23 out of 25 baskets.
She tied with two other girls, which led to a shoot-off in which each player had to shoot five baskets. Jameson was able to sink all five and walk away with an engraved trophy.

Jacob McGovern
West Carroll High School senior and 2009-2010 Special Teams Player of the Year, Jacob McGovern, has been accepted and will attend Quincy University in the fall of 2010. Jacob is the son of Kevin and Stacie Davis of Thomson, Il. Quincy has awarded Jacob with a $7,500 scholarship and multiple grants. Eastland Tops Aquin

Despite Freeport Aquin getting on the board and holding a two to nothing lead after four innings, Eastland came back with five runs in the next two innings to come away with the 5-2 victory.
Bricelym Myers took the win for the Cougars on the mound giving up four hits while walking none and striking out five Aquin batters. Marissa Harris had a double for Eastland and teammate Megan Bunyer blasted a home run.

West Carroll Blasts Blackhawks

The Thunder scored early and in every inning to come away with the easy 9-3 win. Stockton started the game by scoring two in the top of the first but West Carroll came right back to tie the score in the bottom of the inning.
Kim Durward then shut down the Blackhawk hitters, giving up just another lone run in the fourth inning. The Thunder meanwhile put another two on the board in the second and two more in the fifth while plating single runs in the third, fourth and sixth innings. The Thunders Taylor Cole had a pair of doubles with Tygan Cole adding a double with teammate Ashley Huebner adding a triple. Stockton’s Jessica Brunner belted a home run in a losing effort.
Coach Mathey said, “Although we left eight base runners on in the first three innings, we stayed at it and kept the pressure on Stockton. We did a good job of team hitting as seven different players had hits in the game.”
Milledgeville/Polo scored six runs in the first two innings and cruised to the easy ten to one victory over Forreston. The Cardinals lone run came in the fourth. The Missiles added two in the fourth and another pair of runs in the fifth to put this game out of reach.
Keali Engelkens hurled a three hitter, walking two and fanning ten Cardinal hitters. Forreston’s Alyssa Edler took the loss, Keali also had four hits at the plate with a triple and a pair of runs batted in. Teammate Katelyn Grobe had a single, triple home run and a run batted in. Andrea Herin also had a pair of runs batted in for M/P.

Missiles Edge Cards In Game Two

Keali Engelkens hurled another three hitter as M’ville/Polo edged Forreston three to two in the second game of the double header. Keali walked a single hitter and struck out seven in notching the win. She also helped her own cause with the bat with a pair of doubles and a triple. Teammate Katelyn Grobe added a double.

Eastland’s Marissa Harris pitched a one hit gem and the Cougars scored single runs in the second and third innings to take the two to nothing victory. Marissa went the distance on the mound walking one and fanning eleven Pearl City batters. Gwen Scott took the loss for Pearl City giving up six hits and walking one while striking out eight Eastland hitters. Katelyn Dickman had a double for the Cougars and teammate Taylor Ruter went two for three.

The Missiles jumped out to a fast two to nothing lead and added a single run in the fourth, then held on as the Indians put a pair on the board in the seventh. Keali Engelkens took the pitching victory for M/P, giving up five hits and walking two while striking out seven Dakota hitters. The Indians Sam Derr took the loss also allowing just five hits and walking two while striking out five. Keali had a pair of singles at the plate while teammate Katelyn Grobe added a triple. Dakota’s Kasie Kolthoff also had a triple.

M’ville/Polo pounded out thirteen hits and Keali Engelkens and Emily Bush combined on a four hit shout out as the Missiles cruised to the eight to nothing win. M’ville/Polo jumped out to a two to nothing lead in the first and added four in the third and another pair in the fourth to take the victory. Keali helped herself with the bat adding a pair of singles and a triple while teammates Katelyn Grobe, Taylor Kent and Brianna Herin knocked in five of the Missiles eight runs. Sterling Newmans Sarah Cesarek took the pitching loss.

The Thunder were led by the pitching of Tyler Brashaw and the hitting of Brady Edward and Adam Ferguson as the beat River Ridge seven to three at Alliant Energy Field in Clinton, Iowa. West Carroll led three to one and two innings and erupted for four more runs in the third to put it away. Brashaw went the distance on the hill for the Thunder, giving up five hits and walking none while fanning ten Wildcat hitters. Adam Ferguson had a pair of singles while teammate Edwards had a double and a triple.
Thunder Coach Kamper commented, “We are far from playing the ball I think we are capable of playing but we put together a solid seven innings tonight for the win.”

West Carroll’s Matt LaShelle took the pitching victory allowing only three hits while walking none and striking out seven batters. Tyler Brashaw had a double and two runs batted in for West Carroll. Coach Kamper said, “We are starting to play like we want to be a baseball team. We played good small ball tonight and took advantage of what they gave us.”

West Carroll Pounds Forreston

The Thunder score multiple runs in every inning to cruise to the easy sixteen to six victory over the Cardinals. West Carroll was aided by five Forreston errors to put the game out of reach early, Joe Dykstra led the hit parade for the Thunder with a single, double and five runs batted in. Taylor Brunner added a single and a pair of rbi’s and teammate Evan Williams added a pair of base hits. Adam Ferguson took the pitching victory. Thunder coach Kamper said, “We got a lead with some good small ball, then put the pressure on them and capitalized on their mistakes.”
