The EPC Wildcatz used a punishing ground attack on Friday night at EHS in Laanrk to take the easy 42-7 win over Galena. EPC amassed a total of 435 yards on the ground as ten different players carried the football.
The “Catz opened the scoring as Nathan Falk found the end zone from five yards out to gave EPC the lead. Galena came right back as Pirate quarterback Dalton Montgomery found Dominic Wasmund on a seventy four yard scoring strike. The extra point kick would gave Galena their only lead of the contest. From there, the “Catz defense buckled down and held the Pirates in check as the EPC offense seemingly scored at will.
Running backs Mikki Stichter, Cody Polizzi and Nathan Falk carried the ball the bulk of the times as the three combined for 305 yards on thirty six touches. Falk led the way with one hundred forty eight yards on thirteen carries, Stichter had one hundred one yards on sixteen carries and Polizzi had fifty six yards on seven carries. The three combined to find the end zone five times.
EPC hosts the Le-Win Panthers on Friday night at EHS in Lanark with first place in the NUIC-Northwest on the line. The Pirates will host the Dakota Indians.

Bulldogs Roll Over Missiles
Despite scoring early and staying in the contest at the start, the Milledgeville Missiles couldn’t counter the offense of the Freeport Aquin Bulldogs as the Missiles fell 61-18 Friday night at Floyd Daub Field. Both teams were able to move the football but Aquin found the end zone at will.
Missile running back Daniel Walker found the end zone from seventy six yards away after a Bulldog score but Aquin was able to put four unanswered scores on the board to take control. The Missiles recovered a Bulldog fumbled punt and a sixty two yard pass from quarterback Kameron DawTyne to Guy Morgan made the score 27-12. The Bulldogs would counter with two more score before the half.
A scoring run by DawTyne in the second half would account for the remainder of the Missiles points. He would finish the game with thirty eight yards on four carries and also passed for seventy five yards. Walker led the Missile ground attack, gaining one hundred eighteen yards on seventeen carries.
The Bulldogs finished the game with nearly five hundred yards to Milledgeville’s two hundred twenty six. Milledgeville will host the Orangeville Broncos on Friday evening in Milledgeville while Aquin will travel to Warren to take on the Warriors.

Panthers Cruise Over Thunder
The Thunder traveled to Lena on Friday evening and the host Panthers were less than gracious as they took control of the contest early enroute to the 51-7 win.
Le-Win found the end zone on their opening possession as Quinn Haas scored from six yards out. Another forty two yard TD run by Haas and a Casy Schroeder punt return made the score twenty two to nothing Panthers. Two more scores by Haas and a fifty nine yard run by Tevin Sellers put the Panthers ahead forty three to zero at the half.
The Thunder were able to crack the score board in the third quarter as QB Nick Hughes found Brady Edwards from eighteen yards out. The Panther’s Austin Mancosky found paydirt from fifty eight yards away to make the final score for the Panthers. Haas led the offensive charge for Le-Win, gaining one hundred seventy five yards on just six touches, Sellers gained sixty nine yards on three carries and Mancosky rushed for fifty eight yards on three carries.
Hughes led the Thunder offense, completing eight of thirteen passes for one hundred ten yards. West Carroll hosted the South Beloit Sobos next week while the Panthers travel to Lanark to face EPC.

Mustnags Dominate Crusaders
After working through last week’s shut out defeat at the hands of the Sterling Newman Comets, Morrison were anything but gracious hosts as the dominated Ottawa Marquette to take the 41-14 victory at Bud Cole Field.
The Mustang’s Rowdy Lathrop put Morrison on the board first, finding the end zone from two yards out. QB Matt Wilkens found Matt McDonnell alone in the end zone for Morrison’s second score after a Crusader punt. The two point conversion put the Mustang’s up fourteen to zero with a little under three minutes to go in the first quarter. McDonnell would run the ball in again in the second quarter to put the Mustangs up by three scores. Dennehey then found Brock Deter on a coring strike and the two point conversion made it twenty eight to nothing. Andy Schaver found pay dirt again for Morrison from three yards out and the Mustangs were in total control of the ball game.
Alex Volckmann recovered a fumble by Ottawa Marquette and returned it thirty seven yards for another Morrison score. A continuous clock greeted both teams in the second half as the Mustangs rolled to the easy victory.
Next Friday night will be the Morrison Homecoming game as they host the Port Byron/Riverdale Rams. The Crusaders will travel to Sterling to face the Comets of Sterling Newman.

The theme this year is “Gangster Gala.”
Activities for Spirit Week include special “dress up days” for the student body and staff. Monday is Ugly Sweater Day, Tuesday is Twin Day, Wednesday is Class Color Day, Thursday is 80’s Day and Friday is Green/Black Day. We will end the week with a pep rally and games for students on Friday.
On Thursday, September 22nd, the traditional parade will begin in downtown Savanna. The parade will proceed east from the Marina entrance, onto Third Street, turn onto Division Street and then south on Main Street, ending back at the Marina entrance. Following the parade, the court introductions and crowning will take place at WCHS Massey football field, as well as a pep rally and bonfire.
Should inclement weather occur, the court introduction, crowning and pep rally will be held in the gym on Thursday at 6:30 p.m.
On Friday, September 23rd, the South Beloit Sobos will square off against the Thunder with the varsity game starting at 7 p.m. There will not be a fresh/soph game at this time, as it will be played the following Monday, September 26th at 5:30 p.m. Homecoming court members will be introduced before the game at 6:30 and the band and cheerleaders will present special programs during half time.
Festivities will culminate on Saturday, September 24th in the high school gym in Savanna with the dance from 7-10 p.m. The court will be introduced at 8:30 p.m. and parents are welcome to attend the presentation. Local civic organizations and boosters are welcomed and encouraged to support the students through the parade and other related activities. Non-school groups are encouraged to participate in the parade, but they should have some theme, sign, etc. that pertains to homecoming. It has also been asked, for safety purposes, any group who would like to throw candy should do so only if walking. Please do not toss candy from moving vehicles.
Those who would like to join the parade may contact the WCHS student council advisors. No political person or group will be allowed. Please show your school spirit by entering a float and wearing green and black on Friday.

IHSA Announces New Individual Wrestling State Final Format
The Illinois High School Association Board of Directors approved a recommendation for a format change to the IHSA Individual Wrestling State Finals at it’s regularly scheduled meeting on September 12th. The new format will feature 16 qualifiers per each of the 14 weight classes in each of the three classes. The format will also feature consolation wrestlebacks beginning after the quarterfinal rounds and the top six individuals in each weight class will medal.
In order to complete the expanded tournament, the state tournament will now begin on Thursday, which had previously been reserved for warm-up mat time and meetings. “Essentially, what we have done is taken the Class 3A tournament format and copied it for Class 1A and Class 2A,” said Executive Director Marty Hickman. “All of the coaches and individuals were currently arriving at Assembly Hall on Thursday afternoon for skin checks, coaches meetings and mat time for the wrestlers. Being able to expand the number of state final qualifiers, keep the format Class 3A was accustomed to intact and avoid a schedule that would require more missed class time or hotel expenses makes this a win-win format in my mind.”
Since the IHSA expanded to three classes in individual wrestling in 2009, the Class 1A and Class 2A each brought 12 qualifiers per each of the 14 weight classes to the state finals, while Class 3A was made up of 40 percent of the competing schools, while 30 percent were allocated to Class 1A and 30 percent to Class 2A, resulting in the larger number of Class 3A qualifiers. The classification changes made by the IHSA Board in June provided an equal 33 percent distribution of schools in each class, which led to the current format changes.
“We appreciate all the input that the IHSA Wrestling Advisory Board Committee and the state wrestling community as a whole provided us during this process,” said IHSA Assistant Executive Director and Wrestling Administrator Craig Anderson. “They let us know what things were the most important to them and in the end, I think we made some compromises that will result in the IHSA state final tournament continuing to be one of the best in the country.”
The changes will go into effect for the 2012 state tournament, which is scheduled for Thursday, Friday and Saturday, February 16-18 at Assembly Hall on the University of Illinois campus in Champaign.
