West Carroll 7th Grade Volleyball

The 7th grade Black team has had a very busy month of volleyball. The black team faced Chadwick on Sept. 9 in a hard fought match which they lost 22-25 and 22-25. However, they had a comeback in the consolation game and defeated the Streaks 17-15. The following Wednesday, Sept. 15, the 7th grade teams traveled to Sterling to compete with the Challand teams at the Westwood Sports Complex. The black team could not keep up with their opponent and fell 14-25 and 3-25 and also lost the consolation match 10-15.

“It was a disheartening experience,” said Coach Kari Baisden. “The girls got down on themselves and just couldn’t overcome it.’ The next day, the black team faced Lena-Winslow. The Panthers won the match in two games 11-25 and 6-25.

“I think the girls were still down from Wednesday,” Coach Baisden said. “They just couldn’t get themselves moving on the court.” The black team rebounded on Monday, Sept. 20 against Fulton Jr. High. “We were able to move the ball, talk to each other on the court and get a little emotion going-all things that had been missing in previous games,” explained Coach Baisden.

Top servers Gitselle Rodriquez, Kaylee Plattenberger and Cassie Johnson led the team to victories in two games with scores of 25-12 and 15-5. Following this victory, the black team remained on top against Stillman Valley on Sept. 22 with scores of 25-11 and 25-18. They played the consolation game to 21-22 until time expired for the game. The following day, the West Carroll black team dominated the young Unity of Fulton team with scores of 25-8, 25-14 and 15-3. “These were great wins for us. It really gave us some emotion and a sense that we can play sound volleyball.”

West Carroll 7th Grade Black Team Plays In Tourney

The young Thunder had momentum from some previous wins going into the River Ridge Tournament on Saturday, Sept. 25. They played a great match right off the bat defeating the Eastland team in three games with scores of 21-14, 13-21 and 21-19. “This is the best I have seen these girls play,” said Coach Kari Baisden. “They were talking, moving to the ball and everyone was getting their serves in. They are finally putting everything together.”

The Thunder went on to play a team from Benton, WI in a very close match. Although they lost the match (21-11,19-21,19-21), the final two games were very close and could have gone the other way with just minor improvements. “I was very proud of the girls for how they were playing in this tournament. We were in this match to the very end.”

The final match for the Thunder had them facing a daunting Galena team. “Galena had beaten both the other teams in our pool and we faced them during the last match of the day. With only seven girls on the team, they were all a little tired and we just couldn’t muster up the energy to play at the same level,” commented Coach Baisden. The Thunder lost the match in two with scores of 13-21 and 16-21 but good serving from Elle Jones and Alex Coats kept us in the game. The Thunder face Galena again at home on Sept. 30 where they will try to change the outcome.

On a sunny but windy day at Eastland High School on Saturday, the EPC Wildcats had their offense and defense in high gear, crushing the Chicago St. Francis de Sales Pioneers 62-6. The victory improves EPC’s record to six wins and no losses on the season and makes them the only unbeaten team left in the Northwest Upstate Illini Conference.

EPC struck first as Mack Byers found the end zone from five yards out and Zach Moyer’s extra point made it seven to nothing. The Wildcatz then put thirty five second quarter points on the scoreboard to secure the win with five different players finding paydirt.

The Pioneers would get their only points in the contest in the third quarter as quarterback Ruben Cruz returned a fumble eighty-five yards for the score. EPC would extend their lead to forty eight to six as Kevin Glastetter returned his second kick of the game for the touchdown. EPC’s Brad Young and Mikki Stichter added fourth quarter scores to make the final margin of victory for the Catz.

Aaron Reed led the EPC ground game, rushing the football thirteen times for one hundred twenty yards while teammate Mikki Stichter had fourteen carries for seventy two yards. Brad Young added seventy one yards and two scores in the contest.

EPC hosts Warren on Friday night in Lanark. The fresh/soph contest pitted EPC against River Ridge with EPC taking the 7-6 win.

Thunder Shut Out Sobos

By Craig Lang

Prairie Advocate Sports

The West Carroll Thunder put a second quarter field goal on the scoreboard and a twenty two point third quarter to run away from South Beloit enroute to the 31-0 win in South Beloit on Friday night.

A twenty two yard second quarter kick by Michael Hartman would prove to be the only points the Thunder would need as the West Carroll defense held the Sobo’s offense in check. A forty two yard run by Marcus Klein, a seven yard pass from quarterback Matt LaShelle to Brandon Larson and a thirty two yard run by LaShelle would make the score twenty-four to six to start the final quarter. Brady Edwards added a five yard fourth quarter touchdown to make the final score.

The Thunder piled up four hundred eighty seven yards of total offense with four hundred sixty two coming on the ground. Joe Sullivan led the ground attack, carrying the football eleven times for one hundred twenty nine yards, Tyler Kingery thirteen carries for one hundred seven and Marcus Klein with fifteen carries for ninety eight yards.

The Thunder host Sherrard this Friday in Savanna while South Beloit travels to Dakota to meet the Indians.

By Craig Lang

Prairie Advocate Sports

The Morrison Mustangs hosted the Kewanee Boilermakers on Friday night and came away with the 38-6 victory. Despite the score being knotted at six apiece after the first quarter, the Mustangs put up two second quarter scores to take an eighteen to six lead into the locker room at the halftime intermission.

The Morrison defense then stepped up to shut down Kewanee’s offense as the host Mustangs put thirteen more points on the board. A fourth quarter score by Mark McDonnell accounted for Morrison’s final points of the contest.

Morrison piled up two hundred and twenty rushing yards with Andy Schaver leading the way with seventy five yards on seventeen carries. Quarterback Danny Dennehey completed six of eleven passes for one hundred twelve yards. Morrison won the fresh/soph game 40-8.
