A packed to the rafters Pearl City High School gymnasium was the setting for Thursday evening’s sectional championship match between the Scales Mound Hornets and the Eastland Lady Cougars. A very vocal sea of blue and orange packed one side of the seats and an equally loud sea of green filled the other as play began.
Game one began with the Hornets jumping out to a lead and Eastland battling back. The intensity was evident as both sides pounded the ball at the other. The end result of match one was a 25-23 Hornet victory.
Eastland came out for the second match and jumped out to the early lead. The Lady Cougars remained in control and pulled away for the 25-15 win.
Match three saw the Eastland team jump out to the lead, eventually stretching that lead to 18-9. Scales Mound proved there was absolutely no quit in them as they battled back to tie the score at eighteen. The score then went back and forth with first one team and then the other taking a slim lead.
The score eventually went to 23-all and the Hornets were able to put the finishing two points on the board to end the Lady Cougars run at their excellent season.
The Lady Cougars Courtney Blair led Eastland with nineteen kills and the Hornets Whitney Kieffer led Scales Mound with seventeen.
Eastland closes out their season with a mark of 35 wins and 4 losses. The victorious Hornets move on to play Ottawa Marquette on Saturday night November 6th at the Pecatonica Super Sectional.

For the second season in a row the Morrison Mustangs traveled to Lanark to face the EPC Wildcatz, with a berth in the IHSA Class 2A state quarter finals on the line. For the second time in two years, the final outcome was the same as Morrison dominated the Catz to take the 42-9 win and advance to the state quarter finals where they will face the undefeated Sterling Newman Comets.
Big plays from the Mustangs and a stingy defense proved to be the difference in this years game as EPC elected to kick the football rather than receive it to open the game. It proved to be a wise move as Morrison fumbled the kick and the Catz recovered on the Mustang forty nine yard line. A three and out forced EPC to punt and Morrison capitalized.
The Mustangs Will Bird took the football eighty seven yards to pay dirt on the first play only to have it nullified by a penalty. The Mustangs were forced to punt and Morrison’s Matt McDonnell picked off a Drake Walker pass and brought it out to the Mustang twenty four yard line. On the first play from scrimmage QB Danny Dennehey found Bird for a seventy six yard scoring strike and after the extra point kick the Mustang’s led 7-0.
Following the kick off an EPC fumble gave the ball back to Morrison. A seventeen yard pass from Dennehey to Jason Caruso and the extra point made it 14-0.
The Catz managed to get on the board in the second quarter as Zach Moyer converted a thirty yard field goal attempt to make it 14-3 Morrison.
The Mustangs offense came alive and they put two more touchdowns on the scoreboard to open a lead the EPC could not close. A one yard run by Andy Schaver and a thirty nine yard pass also to Schaver made the margin 29-3 at the half.
Schaver would find the end zone again in the third quarter from two yards out to extend Morrison’s lead to 36-3 before EPC’s Aaron Reed scored on a three yard run. Schaver again found the end zone in the fourth quarter on a five yard run to make the final margin of victory.
Schaver led the Morrison ground game running the football sixteen times for fifty seven yards and three scores. QB Dennehey completed six of ten passes for one hundred seventy six yards. EPC was led on the ground by Jordan Blair who carried the ball three times for twenty two yards. Walker completed nine of twenty passes for one hundred fourteen yards.
The victorious Mustangs face Newman on Saturday at 1 p.m.
