Mildred E. Frederick

Mildred E. Frederick, 90 yrs. old, of Lanark, died Thursday, Dec. 9, 2010 at Good Samaritan Nursing Center in Mt.Carroll.

She was born May 6, 1920 near Lanark, the daughter of Clifford and Lillian (Stitzel) Engles and was a 1937 graduate of Lanark High School. She and Ward C. Frederick were married on Sept. 1, 1945.

She was employed in the office of the Fuhrmann Canning Co. in Lanark and then as a church secretary in Rockford for 22 years. Mildred was a longtime member of the First Church of The Brethren in Rockford. She and her late husband were very involved in the Hearing Education Association in Rockford.

Survivors include one son, Nathan (Pam) Frederick and son Thomas of Rochelle , one daughter, Gay Marcille Frederick (Paul Cook) and daughter Jocelyn Cook of Blue Island; one sister, Donna Kloepping of Lanark, one brother, Joe Engles of Dixon, a sister-in-law, Eve Engles of Freeport, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1980, her parents, and two brothers, Alan and Francis “Chic” Engles.

Services will be at ll:00 A.M. on Saurday, Dec. 11, 2010 at the Russell-Frank Funeral Home in Lanark with Pastor John Sgro of the Church of the Brethren in Lanark officiating. Entombment will be at 2:00 P.M. in Sunset Memorial Gardens in Rockford. Friends may call after l0:00 A.M. on Saturday at the funeral home until the time of service.

A memorial has been established in her memory.

Vivian Eldora Edgerton

Vivian Eldora Edgerton, age 92, of Savanna, Illinois, died Wednesday, December 8, 2010, at her home in rural Savanna. Cremation rites will be accorded. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 26, 2010, at the United Presbyterian Church, Hanover, Illinois. Burial will take place in the Evergreen Cemetery at a later date. A memorial gathering will be held from 1:00 – 2:00 p.m., prior to the service at the church. Memorials may be given to the Savanna Food Pantry in Vivian’s memory. Vivian was born on June 30, 1918, the daughter of Clifford Sumner and Laurel Cyntithia (Sullivan) Whittington in Mercer County, Illinois. Vivian married Earl Steele Edgerton on March 21, 1942 in Davenport, Iowa. Earl died on September 5, 1972.

Vivian was a homemaker who loved taking care of her family. She later worked for the Eaton Corporation in Hanover, before retiring in 1998. Vivian was a longtime member of the United Presbyterian Church, Hanover and was involved in several church circles. She moved to rural Savanna in 1998, where she enjoyed the outdoors and gardening. In her younger years, Vivian loved living on a farm and riding horses. She also enjoyed playing cards, especially Euchre and Bridge. Most of all, Vivian cherished spending time with her friends and family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Vivian will be dearly missed by her four children, Don (Colleen) Edgerton of Hanover, Ada (Terry) Fisher of Freeport, Illinois, Dean (Cindi) Edgerton of Yorktown, Virginia and Verda (Darren) Gochee of Maple Park, Illinois; thirteen grandchildren, David (Sara) Edgerton, John (Tammy) Edgerton, Robert (Cary) Edgerton, Andrew, Daniel, Aimee and Aric Edgerton, Terri (Melvin) Bennett, Becky (Jim) McGlynn, Amy (Robert) Charlesworth, Chris (Greg) Mohr, Kyle (Nettie) Embry and Vernon Gochee; sixteen great grandchildren; two sisters, Hazel Speer of Hanover and Betty Slaymaker of Albany, Illinois; and many nieces and nephews.

Vivian was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Earl; two infant children; one brother, Glenn (Frances) Whitington; and two brothers in-law, Raymond Speer and Robert Slaymaker.

Margaret Sprecher

Margaret “Fern” Sprecher, age 78, of Hanover, Illinois, passed away peacefully on Dec. 7, 2010 at her daughter’s home in Elizabeth, Illinois, surrounded by her loving family. A Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, December 11, 2010, at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Hanover with Father Noel Jacob as Celebrant. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Hanover. Visitation will be held prior to the Mass from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Saturday, December 11th at St. John The Evangelist Catholic Church Hanover. A memorial fund has been established in Fern’s memory.

Mrs. Mildred Rummel

Mrs. Mildred Ila Rummel, age 87, of Scales Mound, Illinois (formerly of Hanover, Illinois), passed away on December 7, 2010 at her home. A Funeral Service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, December 11, 2010 at the United Presbyterian Church, Hanover, Illinois, with Pastor Gary Kirst of the Galena Bible Church officiating. Burial will be in Log Church Cemetery, Hanover. A Visitation will be held from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. on Friday, December 10, 2010 at the Law-Jones Funeral Home, Hanover. Memorials may be given to the Alzheimer’s Association in Mildred’s memory.

Steve D. Smith

Steve D. Smith, age 59, of Savanna, Illinois, died Wednesday, December 8, 2010, at his home in Savanna. Cremation rites will be accorded and a memorial service will be held at a later date.
