EPC Runs Over Sobos

By Craig Lang

Prairie Advocate Sports

The EPC Wildcats running game was in high gear on Friday night in Pearl City as they ran over, around and through South Beloit enroute to the easy 42-6 victory to open the 2010 season.

The Sobos had no answer for the Catz ground game as EPC marched fifty three yards on six plays, capped off by Mack Byers eight yard TD run. After a blocked punt, Aaron Reed went into the end zone from a yard out for EPC’s second touchdown of the night. Kevin Glastetter’s twenty four yard run to paydirt was EPC’s third score of the first half. Brad Young scored from two yards out for EPC’s fourth score. Glastetter then hooked up with Calvin Cassens for a fourteen yard TD pass to make it 35-0.

The Sobos kicked off to open the second half and Glastetter ran it back eighty two yards for the Catz sixth TD of the game. Aaron Reed led the Catz with eighty one yards on eleven carries. The Sobos Cole Hagstrom accounted for South Beloit’s only touchdown of the evening.

Cardinals Outlast Thunder

By Craig Lang

Prairie Advocate Sports

In a game of stalled drives and not a whole lot of offense, the Forreston Cardinals managed to punch the football into the end zone twice in the final quarter to come away with the 14-0 win at Massey Field in Savanna.

Through three quarters the two teams played to a virtual draw as drive after drive ended in either a punt or a turnover. Forreston managed to take the seven to nothing lead as Adam Akins found the end zone from three yards out. Kicker Justin Ruter added the PAT to make it seven to nothing. Six and a half minutes later running back Hunter Hake went in from four yards out and Ruter’s kick made it fourteen to nothing.

The Cardinals amassed 270 yards on the ground to the Thunder’s 206. Forreston managed 278 yards of total offense to West Carroll’s 239. Time of possession favored the Cardinal’s as they managed to hold the football for almost thirteen more minutes than the Thunder.

Tyler Kingery led the way for West Carroll’s running game with 74 yards on seven carries while Joey Sullivan added 67 yards on nine touches. QB Matt LaShelle completed four of thirteen passes for forty six yards. The Cardinals were led by Hake’s 99 yards on 23 touches while teammate Akins added 97 yards on 14 carries.

By Craig Lang

Prairie Advocate Sports

The Morrison Mustangs opened the 2010 season with a convincing 34-13 victory over the Fulton Steamers to claim the fabled Wooden Shoe. The Mustangs, who won the 2009 Class 2A state title, ran and passed at will over the Fulton squad to take the victory.

The Morrison squad led 14-6 at the half and outscored the Fulton team twenty to seven in the second half to make the final margin of victory. Morrison’s Will Bird led the Mustangs with seventy seven yards on the ground while teammate Andy Schaver accounted for sixty two. Mustang QB Danny Dennehey accounted for three of Morrison’s scores. The Mustang’s Jason Caruso also added a touchdown.
