Mildred E. Moltmann

Mildred E. “Millie” Moltmann, age 90, of Mt. Carroll, Illinois died on Monday, August 30, 2010 at the Carroll County Good Samaritan Nursing Center, Mount Carroll. Funeral Services will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, September 4, 2010 at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church, Mt. Carroll with Reverend Elizabeth Mascal officiating.  Cremation Rites will be accorded following the funeral service and burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery, Mt. Carroll at a later date. Visitation will be held from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. Friday, September 3, 2010 at the Frank-Law-Jones Funeral Home, Mount Carroll.  Memorials may be given to the Carroll County Humane Society and the First Evangelical Lutheran Church, Mt. Millie was born February 5, 1920 to Peter and Laura (Oberheim) Fulrath at Center Hill. After Millie graduated from Mt. Carroll High School, she worked for Production Credit Association and the Federal Land Bank Administration until her marriage in 1940 to Marvin Henry Moltmann.

After Marve bought the Ford Dealership in Mt. Carroll in 1949 and went into business with Mil’s brother-in-law Max Smith, Millie continued to use her excellent bookkeeping, shorthand and typing skills by working from time to time as the bookkeeper and secretary for Moltmann and Smith Ford, and also for Broderick Builders.

Millie was an excellent seamstress, and she liked the challenge of designing the latest fashions from wedding gowns and formals to casual attire for her family. Millie loved traveling in the Airstream trailer with Marve, her grandchildren, and dog while tending her tomato and green pepper seedlings under the grow light unit that Marvin installed in the trailer. Millie was devoted to her family, her dogs, and she enjoyed feeding and watching the birds and gardening. She was a member of the First Evangelical Lutheran Church, Mt. Carroll.

Millie will be dearly missed by three daughters, Linda (Ralph) Soderholm of Colona, Illinois, Mary Lou (Edwin) Bennett of Bull Valley, Illinois and Jill (Rod) Bess of Mt. Carroll; a son, Jim (Bonnie) Moltmann of St. Louis, Missouri; five grandchildren, Timothy Golden, Steven (Kris) Golden, Ryan (Shanna) Bess, Emily (Scott) Swanigan and Tiffany (Craig) Cassata; and eleven great grandchildren, Broc, James and Tony Golden, Grant and Grace Swanigan, Erin, Will and Lexi Golden, Jackson Bess; Ben and Logan Cassata; and one great-great granddaughter, Charlotte Golden.

Millie is preceded in death her husband, Marvin; parents; brothers, Harold and Curtis Fulrath; sisters, Mabel Petty and Lola Smith; son-in-law, James Golden, and grandson, Peter Golden.

Orlo C. Long

Orlo C. Long, 81, of Polo, died Wednesday, September 1, 2010 at Swedish American Hospital, Rockford. He was co-owner of the Hazelhurst Elevator for thirty-six years, prior to his retirement. Orlo was born June 25, 1929 in Sterling, the son of Norman and Bertha (Landis) Long. He served as a sargeant in the United States Marines during the Korean War. He married Dolores Ritenour on July 5, 1958 in Polo. She preceded him in death on Decmber 28, 2003.

Survivors include two daughters, Dee Ann (Greg Giedd) Cecchetti of Milledgeville and Julie (Ray) Civitts of Toccoa, GA; one sister, Elda (Harold) Bachman; and five grandchildren, Lori, Lisa and Leah Civitts, Dana and Jana Cecchetti; a special friend Dolores “Babe” Jackley.

In recent years, Orlo enjoyed golf, watching sports, attending church, and spending time with family and friends. He was a lifelong member of the American Legion of Polo and the Moose Lodge of Sterlng.

Karin M. Haan

Karin M. Haan, 52, died Sunday, September 5, 2010 at her home after fighting a courageous battle with cancer. Funeral services will be 10:30 AM Thursday at Schilling Funeral Home, with Reverend Kenneth Zuithoff officiating. Cremation and burial will take place at a later date. Visitation will be Wednesday evening from 5-8 PM at the funeral home. A Memorial has been established to Hospice of the Rock River Valley.
