EHS Golf Sets Standard

This year’s team, pictured here before the Sectional in Algonquin, advanced farther than any other golf team in school history. The 2010 Eastland golf season was a very successful one. The Cougars finished with a season record of 17-4 in matches. This was good for second place in the NUIC. The Cougars also finished second in the conference tournament, held at Park Hills in Freeport. It was at the Regional in Geneseo where the boys played some of their best golf of the season under post-season pressure. Their team total of 325 was good for third place behind Fulton and Riverdale, who both posted 321. This third-place total advanced the entire team to the Sectional at Algonquin – a first for an Eastland golf team. The 2010 golf team has set the standard for future teams to exceed.

In a football game that appeared on paper to match up to fairly even squads, the Morrison Mustangs took control of the game early and cruised to the easy 46-0 victory.

The Morrison offense and defense was hitting on all cylinders during the game as the offense moved the football at will and the defense held a good Storm offense in check throughout the contest. The Morrison defense held Bureau Valley’s offense in check, allowing only twenty eight rushing yards and keeping them at zero in the passing column. Bureau Valley was held to forty six yards of total offense.

Morrison was able to find the endzone immediately with QB Danny Dennehey finding Nick Volkmann for a thirty five yard scoring strike. A thirteen yard run by Andy Schaver accounted for the Mustang;s second score. Mark McDonnell found the endzone for Morrison’s third TD of the night on a one yard run.

Caruso led the Mustang ground attack, carring the football seven times for seventy six yards. QB Dennehey completed six of ten passes for one hundred twenty four yards and two scores. Will Bird added a seventy yard punt return for a score. The Mustangs finish the regular season visiting Erie/Prophetstown, while Bureau Valley hosts Sterling Newman.

Panthers Slip By Wildcatz

By Craig Lang

Prairie Advocate Sports

A crisp clear Friday night was the setting at Eastland High School on Friday night for a match up between the EPC Wildcatz and the Le-Win Panthers. The game was billed as the game of the season with sole possession of first place in the Nothwest Upstate Illini Northwest Conference at stake. A victory by the Catz would give them first alone and a win by the Panthers would create a three way tie with EPC, Le-Win and Dakota all sharing the lead.

The Panthers struck first as QB Joe Edler found Adam Werhane in the back of the endzone for a 7-0 Le-Win lead.

EPC”s Kevin Glastetter took the ensuing kickoff forty nine yards to the Panther thirty five. A few plays later, running back Aaron Reed would carry the football seven yards for the score.

A missed extra point made the score Le-Win 7 and EPC 6. A Trey Griffin rushing touchdown would give the visiting Panthers a 14-6 halftime lead.

A second Griffin score in the third quarter extended Le-Win’s lead to 21-6. A little razzle dazzle by the Catz in the fourth quarter closed the gap to nine as Joe Harrington took a pitch from QB Drake Walker and found brother Pat in the endzone to make the score 21-12. EPC then tried a two point conversion with Reed being stopped short of the goal line.

Then, with just over three minutes to play, EPC was able to drive the length of the field and find the endzone again to cut the Le-Win lead to just two points. The ensuing onside kick was recovered by the Panthers to end the threat.

EPC finishes the regular season at Pecatonica while Le-Win travels to Warren.

Wildcats Get First Victory

By Craig Lang

Prairie Advocate Sports

Before Saturday’s contest the River Ridge varsity football team was winless. Taking on Chicago St. Francis de Sales changed that in one afternoon. A strong ground attack led the Wildcats to their first ever home victory, taking the 20-16 win over the Pioneers.

A one yard TD run by quarterback Ryan Randecker put River Ridge ahead six to nothing. St. Francis took a two point lead in at the half after scoring on a nine yard pass pass and converting on the two point attempt. River Ridge’s ground game took over in the second half to seal the victory for the Wildcats.

Matt Carroll led the River Ridge running game. Carrying the football twenty seven times for one hundred forty three yards and a pair of touchdowns.

Indians Crush Missiles

By Craig Lang

Prairie Advocate Sports

The visiting Dakota Indians put thirty one points on the scoreboard in the first quarter and cruised to the 51-0 Victory over Milledgeville at Floyd Daub Field on Friday night. Dakota used two hundred thirty one yards of total offense to find the end zone four times in the first and three times in the second quarter to put this game away early. Milledgeville managed only eighteen yards of total offense in the contest. Six fumbles by the Missiles also cost them, with one being returned for a score. The Milledgeville squad finishes their season at Polo taking on the host Marcos.

Thunder Roll Over Pecatonica

By Craig Lang

Prairie Advocate Sports

The West Carroll Thunder managed to put points on the board in each of the four quarters, rolling to the 34-13 win in Savanna on Friday night. QB Matt LaShelle found pay dirt from three yards out in the first to put the Thunder on top. Pec would follow with a twenty six yard scoring strike to knot the score at six in the second quarter. A thirty one yard field goal by Michael Hartman and a thirty yard run by Marcus Klein would put the Thunder up for good. LaSheele added a twelve yard fourth quarter score.

Klein was the leading rusher for West Carroll, carrying the football nineteen time for one hundred sixty three yards. LaShelle added seventy three yards on seven carries. He also completed nine of eighteen passes for one hundred thirty three yards.

With the win, West Carroll keeps their playoff hopes alive. They need a victory this Friday against Dakota to secure a spot.
