The Cougars and Thunder will meet in the finals of the West Carroll Holiday tourney after both posting wins on Thursday night in Mt. Carroll. West Carroll took on an undefeated Sherrard team who had their three point game in high gear, bombing from long range. The Tigers also played excellent defense, not giving up any easy buckets in the paint.
West Carroll had enough to take two point leads at the end of the first quarter and at the half (32-30). By the end of three quarters, the Thunder had extended the lead to six points at 48-42 and iced the game for West Carroll at the charity stripe. West Carroll hit 10 of 15 free throws in the fourth to take the 70-61 victory. The Thunder were led by Nate Law and Brady Edwards who each dropped in 14. Tyler Brashaw and Eric Naples added 12 each.

Cougars Edge East Dubuque

Mack didn’t score in the game but Eastland clawed out the 53-51 win over East Dubuque. The Cougars took second, falling to West Carroll in the championship game Saturday night. (PA photo/Craig Lang) |
The Cougars managed to escape with a win against an East Dubuque team that came ready to play on Thursday night. The Warriors looked like they were going to put Eastland away early as they jumped out to a big lead 11-2. East Dubuque was hitting from outside and inside appearing to be able to score on the Cougars at will. Their defense was also giving Eastland trouble as they forced several turnovers and were able to capitalize on Cougar miscues.
Eastland kept battling and were finally able to take a lead in the fourth as Tony Dunlap dropped in a twenty five footer to give Eastland it’s first lead of the game. Collin Macomber then took over in the paint, his rebounding and scoring giving Eastland a four point lead with 2 minutes to go. The Cougars then froze the basketball, forcing the Warriors to foul. The strategy almost worked as Eastland missed four of five free throws and the Warriors hit two to tie the game.
Tony Dunlap then took the ball to the bucket and was fouled; hitting both charity tosses to give Eastland the lead with a little under eight seconds to go. East Dubuque’s last shot attempt bounced off the iron to give the Cougars the 53-51 win and advance them to Saturday evening’s championship game against West Carroll.
Collin Macomber led the Cougars with fifteen points with Brad and Tony Dunlap each contributing thirteen apiece. Chance Oster led the Warriors with eighteen points while Tyler McLane added fifteen.

By Craig Lang
Prairie Advocate Sports
West Carroll jumped out to an early lead and survived an Eastland first quarter run to hold their lead. West Carroll kept the basketball in the hands of their inside men and built up the lead through the following three quarters to take the 63-51 win in the championship game of the West Carroll Holiday Tournament.
Inside men Brady Edwards and Nate Law led the Thunder with twenty and eighteen points respectively while Dillon Prowant added eleven.
The last quarter saw the Cougars apply full court pressure on the West Carroll squad but the Thunder always managed to break the press and get the ball inside for the scores. Cougars Take First Place Consolation Game
By Craig Lang
Prairie Advocate Sports
Despite a slow start and a one girl show in the first half, Eastland turned it up a couple notches in the second half to take the convincing 54-27 victory over Fulton.
