The Women’s Committee would like to thank everyone who gave at their American Red Cross blood drive last week. We were able to get 19 pints of blood. This number is quite down from the 50-60 pints we used to be able to get when we were on a regular blood drive schedule however it was still great to get that much. We will hopefully be able to get on a regular collection schedule.
The 4C’s are sponsoring a bus trip to the Putnam Museum on Friday, May 4th. The trip is open to the public. We will be leaving the Carroll County Farm Bureau at 11:30 a.m. and returning approximately 7 p.m. There will be time to browse the museum and we will also enjoy seeing the Last Reef on the giant screen. The trip includes transportation, entrance into the museum, and ticket for the Last Reef. Cost is $30 per person. Contact our office today to reserve your spot.
The brochures are currently being printed for the New Zealand/Australia trip the Northern Illinois County Farm Bureaus are sponsoring with Tri State Travel. We will be holding a trip preview meeting at our office on Wednesday, March 28th at 7 p.m. if you are interested in more information. We will also put the brochure out on our website as soon as we have an electronic copy.
The Cubs’ will have their first Spring Training game on the 4th of March. I have to say I am very anxious to have baseball season start. My least favorite time of the year is the time between the end of the NFL season and the start of the MLB season. There is absolutely nothing to watch on tv (not that I am generally home to watch it but those rare occasions that I am there is nothing to watch!). I know there is plenty of basketball to watch but that is one sport I don’t get too into. I prefer college basketball over NBA though. While all of us Cub fans, hope this is the year, I have to say my first thought is I need to learn who is on the roster after all the off season changes. Don’t forget we are going back to Wrigley Field this year to watch the Cubs play. Our bus trip will take place on Friday, July 13th. It is a 1:20 p.m. game against the Arizona Diamondbacks. Contact our office today if you are interested in signing up. Cost is $70 for members.
Last week the Women’s Committee presented each food pantry that serves Carroll County with a $200 check in celebration of Food Check-out Week. As I said a few weeks ago, the theme for this year’s Food Check-out week was “Stretching Your Grocery Dollar With Healthy, Nutritious Food.” The theme reflects the continuing reality that many Americans are feeling an economic squeeze and as a result, eat out less often and prepare more meals at home.
The good news is that a USDA report favorably supports the economics of healthier eating. Recent food price data shows that prices for unprepared, readily available fresh fruits and vegetables have remained stable relative to dessert and snack foods, such as chips, ice cream and cola. Therefore, as defined by foods in the study, the price of a “healthier” diet has not changed compared to an “unhealthy” diet.
